Milwaukee County Zoo Milwaukee County Zoo news 2018

They do go outside. I was there twice in one week and they were outside both times. It's nice to see them getting some fresh air. The indoor area has always been empty with a sign when I went.
When I went a few weeks ago outside was blocked off there was a sign saying Hodari was outside. It said something about keepers working with him on his anxiety

Yeah, that’s been there since last year at least. I think they are now doing it just to give them time to regroup.

It’s that time again when budgets are being made and we look towards 2019. Some good news and bad news as it looks like capital projects are being made.

Bad news:
Alaskan Coast has been placed on hold. What once was suppose to start planning in 2022 has been removed from the capital projects thru 2023 as of right now. A ray of hope is that there still is a line for it on the capital improvement sheet.

Good news:
A lego exhibit maybe coming in 2019 for the first part of the summer and then another dinosaur exhibit filling out the back half of the summer.

Adventure Africa hippo and rhino portion are still on track to be completed in the next 3 years. It looks like they are hoping to have it done by 2021 so maybe a full celebration of it being completed in 2022? The rhino exhibit looks to be costing over a million more then it was originally planned for.

Instead of the Alaskan Coast, it looks like they are looking at redeveloping the front of the zoo. So the way you enter the zoo and pay will be shifting to front of the zoo no longer at the entrance to the zoos property. Along with the redevolpment of the front it looks like the penguins are getting there home expanded too.

Given the lack of breeding in the polar bear population and bad outlook for the future, I think this is the right decision. They could do some smaller projects to rehab the area, but to spend so much money on polar bears was probably not the smartest decision. Glad to see the rhino and hippo projects on track.

I miss understood, there’s going to be a Dino LEGO sculpture (unofficial cause of LEGO rights) coming next year and then in 2021 there will be another (official) LEGO animal sculpture exhibit coming to the zoo. 2020 is not been announced for the special exhibit.

Can someone explain away the rationale for deferring on Alaskan Coasts and favouring the new entry complex. Is this more of a priority or not for the zoo as a major regional zoo attraction?

I think it comes down to money and resources. The zoo is on the Window to the Wilds campaign for Adventure Africa. Since the Alaskan Coast is heavy investment, I think they are planning doing silent fundraising again and the entry complex is something that they can easily do without hurting their fundraising.

Also with the new west entrance being a different format then the main east one, I feel like they would want to bring the two together system wise and not have a two form entry way into the zoo. Trying to keep it the same.

Quick updates:
The Amos the serval, seems to have some new black strips placed on the glass. Not sure what’s the reason for it. Anyone else know?

The Tapir exhibit finally has a sign that reads the exhibit is closed. Maybe the finally decided that they would move in with the South American exhibit?

The walk up ramp was closed off today to the giraffes feeding encounter. Didn’t see any damage, wonder what it could be.

An old-news update regarding the zoo's off exhibit Tayras and Frankie the jaguar. I recently emailed the zoo regarding them. This was the zoo's response:
Tayra- we would love for them to be sent to another zoo where they could educate visitors, however they are no longer a managed species and therefore are hard to place- unfortunately, most zoos do not have an exhibit or space for them. They are off exhibit at our Zoo because that is where we can provide them with adequate space and enrichment, which is better for the physical and mental health.
Jaguar- ideally we would like him to stay and acquire a female to breed with him. The Species Survival Plan for jaguars will consider our preferences but ultimately decide what's best for the jaguar population as a whole in all of the accredited zoos throughout the country. Currently we do not have the space to bring in an additional jaguar female, let alone any cubs if we were to breed. We have several of tigers that are using all of our available space right now. Once we have fewer tigers, we will have a little more space for receiving an additional jaguar.

-Interesting, albeit disappointing news about the Tayras. I always enjoyed seeing them and wish that more zoos would exhibit them, now because they are "unmanaged." Oh well, maybe some day they'll be exhibited in Milwaukee again. Regarding the jaguars, I love the tigers, and the zoo has a rather impressive collection of five now, but I'd rather see more jaguars (especially because Frankie's genes are so valuable thanks to his father Pat) so I welcome a transfer of tigers, whenever that may come.
