Some updates from my visit today: 01/03/2021
- All three elephants are now on exhibit together.
- There are two Red River Hogs in one of the former elephant indoor stalls. I'm assuming that they were both Radish and Mango and that they get along once again, but it was difficult to see them clearly. One was noticeably smaller and lighter color than the other. Its unlikely, but it could have been a new female?
- Not sure if this one is new, but there were Spotted Whistling Ducks in one of the tropic exhibits in the aviary and I don't remember seeing them before.
- The male Guam Kingfisher is in the jewel exhibit in the aviary now rather than the female.

How were the bonobos and the gorillas?

How were the bonobos and the gorillas?
Gorillas were off exhibit today, bonobos were active! A couple of younger ones were running around and swinging into the side viewing windows. I'm not too familiar with the bonobo groups, but I'm fairly certain it was the group with bonobo Laura.

If there's a bonobo on exhibit that looks like a small, shriveled bean, then it's Laura. It seems like she's always on exhibit.

Per the zoo's Winter 2021 Wild Things newsletter, the Zoological Society is one of over 300 orgs that received a grant from the state to help with lost revenue due to COVID-19.
Also, the zoo will be getting more Moon Jellyfish in the future and put them in a new tank since the new Cuttlefish moved into the tanks where the moon jellies were.
Here's an online version of the full newsletter:

I wonder which tank as they need a round tank

My guess would be the Puget Sound tank. It's round and as far as I could tell, it was empty on my last visit.
That is what I was thinking. I’m wondering if that area is getting a make over because every time I’ve gone there recently there seems to be less and less fish in that corner. So with the cuddle fish and the moon jellyfish moving I wonder if the kelp forest tank is next.

Two male Red river hogs have arrived:

Brothers 'Mort and Dudley' -- red river hogs -- arrive at Milwaukee County Zoo

The Milwaukee County Zoo debuted Tuesday, Jan. 19, its two newest residents: Mort and Dudley!

They're two, 5-year-old red river hogs that arrived from the Dallas Zoo. Both brothers are littermates, they'll spend their time in the former indoor elephant habitat during the winter.

If MCZ is getting new Red River Hogs now then they must plan on keeping them into the foreseeable future, despite what the master plan seemed to suggest.
I’m just super curious on what these new plans for the final phase of Adventure Africa. They seem to be deviating from the original master plan which is expected but what there final project will look like is the million(s) dollar question.

I believe the main entrance area will be done first before phase 3 of adventure Africa

I really do wonder what is happening with the zoo and the future projects. Will other projects be scaled down even more or canceled? Adventure Africa was supposed to be completed years ago but due to fundraising it was pushed back. I’m assuming it was suppose to be the thing that they thought would be the easiest to fundraise for to start the momentum. I don’t think the momentum has gotten to where they wanted it to be at for this master plan.

The Milwaukee County Zoo director will retire this April after serving over 31 years as the director. He will be the longest serving director in the zoos history. What this means for the future is unknown, expansion plans after the last phase maybe scrapped for the new vision for the new zoo director when they are installed.

I'm curious what anyone's take on this is? In my biased and probably unknowledgeable opinion, I see this as a positive thing. Looking back at the zoo since 1990, there have not been many updates and improvements; and the renovations and new exhibits that were made (excluding Big Cat Country indoor exhibits) were more-or-less unimaginative or just downright disappointing. Granted, my knowledge on the director's control of these things is very limited so I wonder what other people's thoughts are.
As with any major shakeups in zoo administrations, I'm excited to see what the future has in store.
