Milwaukee County Zoo Milwaukee County Zoo News 2024

Zoo trip update:

Went to the zoo today, and there’s been a lot of changes as they gear up for the 2024 season.

• They moved the zoomobile ticket house to over by the gazebo, to make room for the penguin construction.
• Once again you can now walk around Impala plains and African forest. The gates have been removed.
• The newest bongo is now on exhibit with the other ones. She’s much smaller than our current female ones.
• The yaks have been sent back to Safari Lake Geneva
• The oryx’s and red river hogs have been now moved, signs have been removed as well.
• The new tiger was still trying to get used to the new indoor exhibit
• The new silverback was on exhibit with its new troop.

As for additional things. They are quickly getting ready for construction to begin. The zoo director what’s construction to start in March so be looking for an official ground breaking anytime now.

Where did the red river hogs and oyrx move to?
Do they have 3 female bongo now?

Unless something changed, the oryx I believe were going to be relocated to the African Waterhole exhibit (with the kudu), and I’d imagine the red river hogs would go to the Winter Quarters like they used to. As for the bongo, yes it should be the two veteran females (sisters Zuri and Sydney) and the new female.

Fascinating if the oryx will be in the African Waterhole alongside the Kudu and Waterbuck - that's three large antelope in one enclosure! Milwaukee has a pretty interesting ungulate collection compared to nearby facilities.

I'm also really glad that the path surrounding Impala Plains and the bongo enclosure is open again. I've still not seen the sealed off section. Look forward to a new perspective.

Very exciting news. On a random note does anyone know why they previously had it gated up so you couldn’t walk around impala plains or the African forest exhibit? Was it for privacy of the animals or construction of some sort? Generally curious.

It was a service path for keepers to access to the hoofstock barn. It seems so minor to those who are unfamiliar with the zoo, but I'm genuinely really happy they unblocked the pathway. Viewing for the bongo enclosure in particular has always been extremely awkward because of the way the gate was positioned.

From what I was told it was an attempt to give the animals more privacy as well.

Also the zoo just announced that they’ll be retiring their steam engines this year and have ordered two new diesel engines. The first new one won’t be here till end of this year or beginning of next year. They are hoping to have the trains run year round once they have all the new engines.

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet, Trumpeter is now in the aviary building, along with a bunch of the birds having moved around when I visited on Saturday

Yeah, I guess what a "trumpeter" is wasn't specified. My mind goes to Trumpeter Swan because it was already in the zoo's collection. It could also be Trumpeter Hornbill, I suppose.

Stumbled upon some updated concept art for the interior of the new rhino/hippo house. Figured it would be of interest to some.
