A call from a resident near to the zoo, looking to identify a strange beast visiting their back garden.
Where it came from is a mystery?

How strange, wonder where it came from.

One would preseme that it's an illegal (?) pet someone's let loose, or it's come from a private menagerie. That or palm civits are migrating to our warming climate from Asia :p

Also-when they say "permanant home", are they sending it to another zoo collection, or rehoming it like a pet?

There are quite a few Palm Civets in private hands so its more likely to have escaped from somebody keeping it illegaly than from somebody that has all the relevant paper work.

I can remember the palm civets for sale was advertised in Cage & Aviary Birds last February 2009 and the telephone code was in Launceston, Cornwall. I wonder if the animal could be escaped from this area? :o

there are quite a few of them in private hands, and there have been at least 5 on the internet classifieds over the last year, several advertised as "hand reared/hand tam,e in fact there is one current at the moment (and genuine), (its not a tska one, but i am generally up to date with what is on the 'net for sale here and there)

we have, at a rough count, some 30 animals being kept, that we know of via our client base.

given that we are not used by everyone, that must mean there are a good few others about also.

its not the only thing to be found stealing food from gardens mind you.. a guy in the uk was startled to find a indian crested porcupine eating the food put out for the hedgehogs in his back garden. the porc' , which had breed in the uk incidently, was caught, and rehomed into a more suitable environment!

then there was the skunk in yorkshire.. the raccoon in christchurch... etc etc

N

(i would so dearly love to have been a fly on the wall when the guy looked out to see a 4ft "hedgehog" in his back garden...its not funny (well, in a serious way), it should not have been allowed to get out.. but by god i would love to have seen the look on his face...)
