Minnesota Zoo Minnesota Zoo News 2021

I just got back from the zoo, so here are some updates.
.Two Von der Decken’s hornbills are temporarily staying at n the golden lion tamarin/three-banded armadillo exhibit, so the tamarins can get some fresh air (for some reason)
.Work has started on the former Visayan warty pig exhibit. It looks like a little more mock-rock is being added, and not much else.

I don’t believe this has been reported on, but Vera (the Amur Tiger born in 2017) has apparently been moved to Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari.

What is it with the big raptors lately? First National Aviary's Steller's Sea Eagle, now a Eurasian Eagle-Owl.
Woah, National Aviary lost a sea eagle!? When?

My guess is that this eagle-owl will probably never be found. Minnesota Zoo’s grounds are huge, most is of it is dense forest closed to the public. An owl should have problem staying hidden there. Can this species hybridize with Great Horned Owls? There are lots of them in the area.

Around two weeks ago, they did manage to recapture it though.

Yeah it might not turn up again. Interesting question re hybridization, I don't know whether they can or not. Seems reasonable that they could...

In 2017, Salisbury Zoo had a spec owl on the lam for a month after its exhibit was destroyed by a falling tree. It was recaptured - and that was a bird that was not being trained to fly to keepers. I wouldn’t be shocked if MN zoo gets this bird back

Apon further research apparently captive hybrids between Great Horned Owls and Eurasian Eagle-Owls have been produced. I wouldn’t be surprised if one is found in or around the Minnesota Zoo in a few years.
