Minnesota Zoo Minnesota Zoo News 2021

Yeah, there's no doubt that bird is Gladys, unless another Eurasian Eagle-Owl happens to be loose the area.

Zebra shark pups are now on exhibit in a small tank with temporary signage—super cute, and worth checking out!

Also—snapped this pic of the (now somewhat outdated) tropics trail map. It's a useful reference that to my knowledge isn't generally available—enjoy!

Where did you find this map? Also, why aren’t Faces of the African Forest & Creatures beneath the canopy shown? It’s probably because this map is intended for staff, so it emphasizes the area’s only accessible to them?

Correct, it's a staff map that is behind the scenes.

I've been reading up on the Creatures Beneath the Canopy addition, and I'm still not quite sure what it is. Is it the nocturnal section? Or is it the final South America trail near the exit?

Sort of both. The map is apparently showing the basement level of the building so the only exhibits depicted are the ones with sunken portions. The main visitor path is mostly above this level, but it descends to the lower level for viewing the tropical reef and then climbs back up through the now largely unused nocturnal hall. The existing South American exhibit, which was called Creatures Beneath the Canopy when it opened, would be above parts of the service area shown in the bottom right part of the map. More recently, the zoo has a proposal to renovate the nocturnal hall into a sort of immersive path to the "treetops" as the visitor walkway climbs from the lower tropical reef viewing back up to the upper level aviary viewing. Some of the literature they've used for this proposal calls this renovation Creatures Beneath the Canopy also.

Hopefully this entails some new species, because if not, then I that would be a major waste of space (and money).

Updates from my visit on Sunday:

. The Pronghorn were off exhibit (possibly testing the EHD vaccine mentioned above?). Three more Przewalski’s Horses were brought in for the day (bringing the zoo to 11 horses overall).

.Nigerian Dwarf Goats & Shetland Sheep were in the now former Llama exhibit. Hopefully something more interesting or exciting to replace them, or just re-incorporating it into the larger Camel/Horse exhibit.

.The Woodland Caribou exhibit was slightly renovated, with a couple more trees & plants added. it’s looks quite nice, actually.

.Not necessarily new news, but some Madagascar Partridges were added to the Walk-Through Aviary.

.The tunnels underneath the Dwarf Crocodile & RRH/Primate Exhibits are now open again.

Nice stuff. Did you take any photos of the Caribou exhibit?
