Ah yes, the Platypus and Beaver, two animals renowned for their climbing ability

Overheard someone the other day approaching the beaver exhibit and saying "Are those capybaras?"

This was on the Minnesota trail.

This was even funnier since the friend is part of my birdwatching group. And he lived in Singapore for a couple years…

I see African Painted Dogs misidentified as hyenas and Red Wolves referred to as coyotes by zoo guests all the time.

Not sure if it has been mentioned already but today I had a whole herd of laymen call a lemur a monkey‍

So yesterday, my friend texted me “here’s a photo of a duck I took” and she sent me a photo of a feral pigeon. I told her that pigeons were not ducks, and she said that they were the same thing because they are both birds. So I told her that using her logic, she was a bat because they were both mammals. Then, she said bats were birds not mammals so I told her bats have fur not feathers. She denied bats have fur so I sent her a photo of a bat’s head. She then claimed that the photo I sent her of a bat’s head was a hyena. Then I sent her a photo of an actual hyena to make sure she knew what a hyena looked like. Well, she said the photo I sent her was a fox.


It’s almost unbelievable how many misidentifications occurred during this one texting session…

Heard a cassowary called a "big-ass duck" today. I imagine it was at least partially tongue in cheek (but really, who knows with the average zoo-goer) but I thought it was hilarious regardless.

Before I knew much about birds, I mistook a wild Dusky Moorhen for a jacana I just saw the long toes and thought "hey!!! that's the bird with long toes that walks on water lilies!!!"

If I was to create a list of the "Top 10 Endangered Animals That Are About To Extinct", I don't think I'd include a single one of the animals included on that list, lol. I certainly wouldn't include the least concern blackbuck!
