Mixed carnivore exhibits

In 2001 Leipzig Zoo kept lions and black-backed jakals but only for three months. Both jakals were injured by lions and died.

As far as I can remember the meerkat/Lion mixed exhibit only lasted the one day! The lioness got a very tasty treat and the zoo were down one meerkat :D :p

The stud male I believe as well?

The previously mentiod Lion and Parakeet mix also planned for otters orginally!. I've heard of polar bears with artic foxes and if anyone else is seeing a theme here you can guess what happened!

Charles Towne Landing in Charleston, SC, once exhibited raccoons, and grey and red foxes in it's Animal Forest. When I was there, the greys were in hiding but the red foxes and raccons seemed to get along fine with each other. Over the years their animal collection has been reduced and this exhibit is no longer (gone too are the wolves which were phased out after their passing, along with a native reptile exhibit and a alligator exhibit).

I recall there were some lions and tigers together in Cambridge, Ontario's African Lion Safari. They also used to (still do? I haven't visited in years) mix American Black Bears with baboons.

Hey what would happen if they try to Mix Sloth Bear and Malayan Tapir in the Same Exhibit? Same Thing to do with Maned Wolf and Guanaco.

Mixed-species exhibits with the members of the Ursidae

There is a detailed article about Mixed-species exhibits with the members of Ursidae, here you can see it:

http://zoorope.freewb.hu/uploads/ragadozok-tarsberletben-i..pdf

Unfortunately it is only in Hungarian, but it has a very abundant collection of unique photos, and there is a table on page 26-27 which enumerates the Ursid and other species been mixed together with the mention of their scientific names.

That is a great find - thanks for posting! There was even one from my state of Arizona (puma and black bear at Out Of Africa). The puma has since died and the exhibit now has just black bear.

Glad to enjoyed the article Arizona Docent!

Yes, I also mentioned that in the article. Furthermore, the bears and cougars lived together with wolves for some time (so all three carnivore species in the same exhibit), but when the canids have reached sexual maturity there were problems between them and the felids, so separation has been taken after that...

Reepark, ebeltoft in denmark -mix black bears and wolves and in an adjoining exhibit bears and bison and may have even at some point mixed the three with success,

Woburn- black bears and wolves for years successfully

Does any one have info on mixing hyena and lions or cheetah and jackal as have heard of time shared enclosures but not direct mixes??

I remember reading somewhere that woodland park zoo mixed their black bears with wolves back in the 60s and 70s and also that a number of carnivore species would sometimes be mixed their like civet, grey wolf, red fox, coyote, binturong, raccoon, peccary, and spotted hyena. This was stopped sometime in the early 1970s.

Woodland park zoo kept several species of feline together at one time like leopard, lion , and tiger. London also kept himalayan and american black bear together.

*my first post on this forum*

Maybe I'm thinking too much out of the box, but I wonder; could a mixed exhibit with polar bear(s) and arctic wolves possibly be successful?

I think maybe it could. Although it's unclear whether any true interaction between the two species occurred, there have been no incidents when wolves broke into a (sleeping) polar bear exhibit in Manitoba last summer.

I think a polar bear would immediately try to kill a single wolf, but what about a pack? With the right number of animals of both species, I am inclined to think both of them would not risk attacking the other.

Especially if the wolves have access to some 'safe spots' where the polar bears can't reach them, I think this could actually work.

And it would make one hell of an exhibit!

Thoughts?
