Mixed specie bird aviary

Hello everyone,

does anyone knows where I can get info on some cool and interesting walk through aviary's (especially in Europe)?

I need some ideas...
Thanks in advanced

Walk through?
I just can help a little bit with info about these type of aviaries in my home zoo (Prague). But you better ask here: Write us - Zoo Praha I'm not really a bird fanatic.
There are 3 of them
Sichuan - "Only those who visited the zoo more than 15 years ago remember the pavilion of water birds called Bechyně’s pavilion. At that time they could find penguins, flamingos, pewits and other water birds in an exposition full of greenery and without any fencing. The complex reconstruction of the pavilion has retained its original and unique look, although the concept is different. The interior of the pavilion called now Sichuan is designed for bird inhabitants of the foothills of the Himalayas. Again the only barrier here is water."
African rocks - "African rocks - that is what we call the new go-through aviary under the rock, opposite the pavilion of big tortoises, which was opened in September 2004. The aviary was built mainly for the critically endangered species of waldrapp ibises, which nest in the rock niches and seek for the sun-lit and sun-heated rock walls. Apart from them you can find here open-billed storks, wood storks, red-billed choughs and other interesting species of birds."
and the one with waterbirds - As the title Estuary suggests we are going to observe the mouth of a huge river. The environment is perfectly suitable for wading birds, shorebirds and waterfowls and these also inhabit the go-through aviary located just next to the pavilion called Sichuan. Apart from the white and scarlet ibises you can admire spoonbills and storks and other species here. The aviary was opened in September 2004. "

I'm not sure if they are cool enough in comparison with other walk through aviaries somewhere else - I didn't visit any other.

Well, there is also a cuckatoo - macaw mixed exhibit. It is not exactly walk through but there is only rope between you and birds and macaws are only about 1-2 meters from you (buit they can be inside by the time you would passing by).

I know my answer won't help much but at least I was quick:)

Are you thinking of indoors or out?
Are you interested in the architecture/design? Bird collection? Overall look and feel?

Here in the U.S., the San Diego Zoo has a HUGE outdoor aviary bult on the side of a hill. Most people enter from the top and stroll down the hillside paths in the aviary.
Miami MetroZoo has a very large sub-tropical outdoor aviary.
The National Aquarium in Baltimore has an indoor, rooftop glass avaiary/rain forest.
The Woodland park Zoo has a beautiful outdoor, temperate aviary over a pond/wetland environment.
The Bronx Zoo has another huge steel aviary for penguins and assorted marine colonial bird species.
Is this the sort of thing you want?

Fort Wayne Children's Zoo has a large outdoor walk-through aviary with Australian pscittacines, kookaburras, cattle egrets, magpie, and Parma wallabies. In anothr part of the zoo there is another smaller walk-through with Scarlet ibis, some ducks, and several other species that I don't remember.

Hi everyone, and thanks for all the input so far!

I'm thinking about outdoor, and I was thinking about 3 or 4 divisions themed by continents.
I'm looking for info about anything that involves these aviaries, specially designing and all things involved into building that sort of exhibit.

I'm still figuring out species to go in, so feel free to give your input too...

Melbourne has an amazing (Although Rat infested) aviary displaying different Australian habitats with their respective birds. You start off in the rainforest section on a tree top level boarwalk and as the boarwalk ascends you come to ground level at the main pond where the Brolgas hang out before rising again to see the scrub section and that's the end.

London now has several impressive walk-through flights....the best outdoor one being the 'African bird safari' has adbims and woolly-necked storks, von der veckens hornbills, royal and glossy starlings, waders and ducks. There is also a smaller one as part of the gorilla exhibit, holding touracos, starlings, green wood hoopoes, and waterfowl.

Also in the UK, pensthorpe conservation trust runs a centre with a fantastic wader walk-through, with breeding groups of ruff, avocet and stilt.

I've just run into a useful picture of the African Rocks. Here it is. http://www.zoolog.cz/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/2007zoopraha_030.jpg
You could get a better picture how it looks like and if it is similar of what you are looking for or not.

(there are about two thirds of the aviary on the picture - the rest looks the same; it is taken from a chairlift; just next to it there are some indoor spaces for smaller species of the aviary - currently you can see breeding pair of vulturine guineafowl with eleven hatchlings there)

the other outdoor walkthrough aviary with waterbirds is not so contact like but spoonbills and ibises are resting in trees just next to the path all the time

For the Birds? In Belgium you should check Paradisio then, a real "birdpark" :)
For questions you should mail at Forumbully here, he is one of "the friend of Paradisio" ;)

The ZooLex Zoo Design Organization is a very good resourse for ideas about high-end exhibits in different zoos worldwide. From my own experience I can highlight the giant aviary in Munich ,Link.

On the other hand, there exist many small low cost walk-through aviaries (I am unsure what exactly you are looking for), so here are pictures of some such solutions from my country.

South american themed aviary (full-winged macaws in 5-6 species, amazons, ducks..) in Zlin, quite simple but well accepted by public.

Asian themed aviary in the same zoo, for ibises and herons, small but densely planted, even a purple gallinule breeds there.

12 meter high aviary in Olomouc, it is not a walk-though exhibit but I think it could easily be trasformed into one. The inhabitants are mainly of african origin (secretary bird, ibises, guineafowl, gulls...). I like the clear linies and the simplicity of its architecture, althrough it is an older one (+30years).

Another aviary in Olomouc, mainly for bigger raptors, with diameter of +70meters.

New walk-through aviary for water bird species (ibises, herons, gallinule...) in Chomutov, the photo was taken during construction, later it has been more planted and furnitured for visitors.

Walk-through aviary in Ohrada, for native singing-birds, wery nice planted I think. it is quite new.

Wery cheap walk-though aviary for flamingos and other waterfowl also in Ohrada. It has been constructed within few weeks due to the risks of avian influenza 2 years ago.

And at the end one older aviary for raptors in Prague. It was constructed some 30 years ago as a walk-through exhibit, but many conflicts between birds and visitors caused it has been closed for public shortly after its opening and stayed so till today.

I almost forgot the wetlands aviary at Healsville sanctuary full of native Australian water birds such as ducks, ibises, spoonbills and the occasional turtle.

Thanks for the pics... I'm looking for something along those lines. I'll try to search info on construction, design, etc...

Thanks everyone
