Mixed species exhibit ideas

Couple more mixes:
Green Heron and Muskrat
Asian Elephant, Malayan Tapir, and Purple Faced Langur (or any langur species)
Okapi and Yellow-backed Duiker
Hippo and Red River Hog
Western Red Colobus and Spotted necked Otter
Cape Porcupine and Fennec Fox
Flying Squirrel and Greater Sage-grouse
Squirrel Monkey, Cotton top Tamarin, and Pacarana
Yes I know this is more than “a couple”
Green Heron + Muskrat : the herons would harass the rodents
Elephants + Tapirs + Langurs : I would avoid to mix Elephants and Tapirs, otherwise Elephants + Langurs or Tapirs + Langurs should be fine
Hippo + Red River Hog : no way. I would avoid every mix between Hippos and other land mammals (except maybe some arboreal and calm primates like Guerezas or Guenons)
Colobus + Otter : I would avoid it, the otters could attack the primates
Squirrel Monkey + Tamarins + Pacarana : OK

So from what I hear from @Great Argus the porcupine should be separate from the foxes and the quail/shrike mix has its issues, but the squirrel would be fine with the grouse aside from habitat differences

So the elephant-tapir mix is just a temperament thing between the two, I presume?
Yes, the elephants can be aggressive against other all the other large mammal species like tapirs and rhinos (and much more heavy than them), and the tapirs would be driven out of the pools if the two species share the same habitat.

So as was my solution with the quail and shrike mix, just breed the birds off-exhibit when breeding is planned.

I'm skeptical of this one. It might work but it might well not. Personally I wouldn't try it. Also by immersive are you meaning walkthrough?
Yes, walkthrough aviary, the area is huge and contains a lot of trees, like the Great Grey Owl & Snowy Owl aviary of Calgary Zoo.

Honestly part of me was concerned I wouldn’t be able to find a mix for a tapir that would be any good.
Minnesota Zoo mixes Malayan Tapir with Demoiselle Crane and (formerly) Binturong.

Milwaukee mixed Baird's Tapir with Alpaca, Greater Rhea, Yellow-footed Tortoise, Red-footed Tortoise, and (formerly) King Vulture.

Brookfield formerly mixed Malayan Tapir with Giant Anteater, Red-faced Spider Monkey, Tufted Capuchin, Common Squirrel Monkey, Goeldi's Monkey, Golden Lion Tamarin, and a variety of neotropical bird species.

Omaha mixes Malayan Tapir with Francois' Langur, Mueller's Gibbon, and a variety of tropical bird species.

I have seen footage of an otter attacking a monkey. Not sure where it was but it was pretty gruesome. River otters are large weasels after all. Do Asian elephants not mix with anything? It seems like there are at least two zoos that mix Africans in the USA (Dallas and Birmingham). I wasn't sure how the temperaments were.
I would also agree with the posts about not mixing porcupines with foxes or probably anything for that matter. Too risky.

Yeah mixing monkeys and otters are always touchy mixes. Some places it works with pretty minor incidents, others have resulted in monkey deaths. Seems to vary depending on species, topography, and amount of space. Accidents by monkeys falling into the water or when young are born often is when things go sour.

Fresno mixes Africans as well I think.
Asians tend to be more temperamental I think, in addition to it being difficult to contain elephants and other species together. I think to a lot of zoos it's not worth the risk and bother.

Are the enclosures needed too large to deal with? Also does the San Diego Safari Park mix their elephants?
