Mogo Wildlife Park Mogo Zoo Bears Move Out

I'm not sure if I'm repeating this but Mogo Zoos bears haved moved out for retirement with another bear in a 2.5 acre exhibit. Yep, Mogo Zoo sent it's two Brown Bears to CWSR. At the empty bear enclosure is a sign saying, we have moved to Cairns, as well as being informed by staff that bear talks will not be held and the reception staff writing moved to cairns on the park maps. Ibelieve this is a good thing for the bears, but am interested in what you have to say, the bear talk at Mogo last time I was there was great and something I was hoping to show my nieces and nephews this week. Any thoughts.

CWSR only had 1 bear left, and article i read said he thought all his x-mas's came at once with 2 new additions- Mogo i will say will be joining the sun bear race.

i think i mogo was to acquire sun bears it would be amazing, giving us 5 Australian zoos plus Alma if you count them participating in the program. a good thing overall. and the enclosure at Mogo is passable

Tough on the old bears however.
While it's good that they are all going to be kept together, Cairns is a stinkin' hot place in summer and Brown bears (as cold weather animals) would find the climate quite horrible. That's one way to kill them off quick!

(Sorry if I sound bitter and twisted - it's just that Brown bears, being reasonably hardy animals, have never had a fair go in Australia, always been kept in sub-standard pits etc. Now they are on the way out, unlamented by everyone except me.)

Wow; having re-read my rant above, I wonder what a psychiatrist would make of it?
Probably tell me that I'm missing my teddy-bear. :p

Ara's Teddy @ 4.50am!

At that hour of a Sunday morning you won't find a psychiatrist to analyse you!

I agree though - going to be a bit of a sudden climate change for the bears.

However, the Perth bears made the move OK and Jenny Jatke has a great team in place now which paved the way for a smooth transition of these bears from Mogo.

Steve - I can't help it if I'm an early riser! :D

(I had a tough upbringing. They sent me to a child psychiatrist, but the kid didn't help me at all!) :p

The bears are doing fine up in Cairns - air-conditioned dens and all- and it was a tough decision for Mogo to let them go as they were very well loved. It would be great to have sun bears in their place, but are all aware (or should be) that it isn't as easy as putting an order in and waiting for delivery. ;)

yes they are. I think they were the result of an unplanned pregancy. Dumped at Mogo because melbourne didn't want them.

they were an unplanned birth, I don't know if they were 'dumped' but Mogo seems to be a place for animals from Melbourne.

"dumped" might not be the right word, but for a while Mogo seemed to recieve alot of old and unwanted Taronga and Melbourne animals. I think the tapirs were unwanted Melbourne animals. And some of the older cats such as the snow leopards came from Taronga. Correct me if I am wrong. ( I know I will be corrected, regardless)

the tapirs also came from melbourne (damn it, bet they wished we had em back now the malayan is permanently off display!) but i'm not sure what else the zoo here have sent them.

Oh, and the snow leopards would have only been around 10 years old (and since had 4 cubs), so not exactly old and decrepit.

sorry, which snow leopards do you mean?

its my understanding they have had two pairs one more recently acquired "unbreedable" pair from taronga and another pair that they have bred before. which pair are you talking about? (and am i even correct?)

I think they got the pair that Taronga had that never breed. once Taronga got it's new pair they have now, the old pair got moved to Mogo.

one would make the assumption faraji was talking about that particular pair also, yet he/she says they "have since had four cubs".

it was my understanding taronga deemed the female infertile due to being placed on contraceptives too young (though i never understood why that meant they also needed to acquire a new male?)

hence why i'm confused.

that's the pair i am referring to. I think that taronga got a new male for no reason other than the other male was getting a bit long in the tooth. The pair that bred at Mogo originally, i don't know where mogo got them from.
