Monarto Safari Park Monarto Safari Park News 2022

It has been a long time coming and has been downsized, though I understand the first 15 Southern white rhinoceros will soon begin their quarantine at Orana, who now have the facilities to receive them.

2023/2024 will be an exciting time for Monarto.
I believe I am just as excited of them obtaining river Hippos as getting a herd herd of White rhinos ;)

A Spotted Hyena cub has been born to female Forest. The cub was born in late August: Name our newest Hyena cub! - Zoos SA

Fantastic news! The first born in the region in two years!

I had suspected they would breed from Forest and Gamba again given they’re an unrelated pair, which head up the zoo’s largest pack:

0.1 Forest (00/00/2007) Unknown x Kigali
1.0 Gamba (00/00/2003) Imported 2007
0.1 Fahari (03/11/2020) Gamba x Forest
0.1 Mahali (03/11/2020) Gamba x Forest
0.0.1 Unnamed (00/08/2022) Gamba x Forest

An interesting note that Monarto are building new Spotted hyena breeding facilities. This will be ahead of the imports they intend making from overseas - presumably an unrelated breeding pair; or perhaps a female to pair with one of the males being transferred from Sydney Zoo.

Also tagging @akasha, so she can update the Spotted hyena population thread with news of the birth.

Werribee quite possibly could join in with a large scale import in three to four years time.

Although Werribee will be joining the breeding programme for Spotted hyena, my assumption is they will be taking on a non breeding pack from Monarto.

We now have three zoos with unrelated breeding pairs - Altina, Mogo and Monarto; with the latter also planning to import hyena from overseas to create an additional pairing. Monarto plan to send one of their two non breeding packs to Sydney in exchange for their males, who they clearly plan to make use of at Monarto.

There’s so many ways this could play out but the most logical assumption is that Werribee will receive the second non breeding pair (Kanzi/Mkoko; Jaali/Majani).

Lemurs Arriving?

It appears some lemurs will be arriving at Monarto Zoo this week as their social media have teased something “leaping into Monarto on Friday.”

The zoo’s lemur walk through is scheduled to open late 2022 and in addition to an import application made in January this year to import 5.5 Ring-tailed lemur from Toledo Zoo, Black and white ruffed lemur are also in their plans.

Given the time taken to process an import from the US, the transfer of some Black and white ruffed lemur into Monarto from another Australian zoo is the more likely possibility - allowing them to open the walk through with this species and the Ring-tailed lemur already on site in the near future.

Sounds very interesting should be worth waiting for.

I agree that the Red Ruffed Lemur would be a nice add to the regions Lemur species

Their only downfall is that in addition to being able to hybridise with the Black and white ruffed lemur, females are highly territorial and can’t remain in their natal troop into adulthood (as they’ll fight with their mother).

Monarto could work around this by maintaining a breeding troop of Red ruffed lemur in their own exhibit (with sons retained) and then additional males or a female (on contraception) housed in the walk through with male Black and white ruffed lemur.

I would be sure there would be quite a few smaller zoos around the region that would be more than willing to take any surplus animals of this highly attractive species

Definitely. Males can (usually) be retained in the troop without issue, so could remain in their natal troop to build up numbers, but the females would surely be snapped up by other holders - either as non breeding surplus or to be paired with a male.

Recent socials post definitely seem to indicate Ring Tailed Lemurs.
