Monarto Safari Park Monarto Safari Park News 2024

A first-time captive breeding. Mallee Emu-Wrens have successfully bred at Monarto with three chicks. Fantastic news for such a threatened and cryptic species: World First Milestone Sees Conservation Project Take Flight - Monarto Safari Park

Fantastic news! the species will need the captive population. Especially since fires of memory wiped out remnant populations not long ago.
Im also not surprised that they bred at Monarto the country side and climate isnt to different to what they come from.

Two Plains-Wanderer chicks have hatched off-show. This is the park’s third breeding season.

Monarto Safari Park have released 50 threatened Southern Purple-spotted Gudgeons into one of the Wild Africa waterholes. Once established, the plan is to start reintroducing the fish into the wild.

7 News Adelaide has announced that Monarto will indeed receive two elephants from Taronga, but it is not yet decided which individuals they will be. It sounds as though that decision will be influenced by the social situation created by Burma and Permai and who is expected to fit in, so won’t be decided until they are introduced.

That’s really exciting news. I’m so glad Taronga have agreed to part with two of their herd; as opposed to Monarto having to import well represented cows from Europe. This is a progressive move, which will maximise the use we make of valuable founder lines.

While Pak Boon and Tang Mo would be the least disruptive transfer from Taronga’s POV, it’s clear two viable cows would be a better addition to the Monarto herd. As you mention, personality/team fit is key and while she’s a viable cow, Pak Boon could prove too dominant for an establishing herd.

With imminent plans to breed Anjalee, I’m wondering if the eventual transfer could involve Anjalee and Thong Dee. They’re both subordinate individuals and bringing in a pregnant Anjalee could potentially provide a mother and daughter for Putra Mas to breed with on site. In the event she’s not pregnant at the point of transfer, she still has more years to breed with Putra Mas than other cows, who are nearing a critical birth interval.

I wonder if there might also be an advantage in Anjalee being a familiar face to Burma, even if they weren't especially close.

Great point! The goal is to achieve a cohesive herd first and foremost and she’s the one cow guaranteed to accept Burma as the matriarch given that was their prior relationship. While they weren’t as close as mother and daughter, Anjalee had a lot of respect for Burma.

I would propose Thong Dee as the strongest candidate (in terms of personality and demographics). Like Anjalee, she’s a subordinate cow and likely to assimilate into the herd without issue.

7News revealed yesterday that it is confirmed that another two female elephants will arrive at Monarto from Taronga Zoo. It is yet to be seen which elephants will make the trip. Keepers will first monitor the social situation between Burma, Permai, and Putra Mas, before making a decision on the other two elephants, to make sure the group has an optimal social outcome (and potentially reproductive outcome with Putra Mas). This will bring the South Australian herd to a solid 5 members.

1.0 Putra Mas (1989)
0.1 Burma (1982)
0.1 Permai (1989)
0.1 X
0.1 X

Very good point!.

From the limited views we see in the pic, it looks quite natural and filled out/lush. Which is a nice contrast for how dry the zoo can be. Ive been there when it was so dry they had no grass anywhere.
It would be interesting to know if those reeds were planted or just started growing there naturally
