Monarto Safari Park Monarto Zoo 2019

Great news! Hopefully the other females breed soon too. It will be great to see some more young chimps running around at Monarto! :p

Awesome news. Common chimpanzee husbandry guidelines advise the ideal composition of a troop is:

-At least three adult males (adult males form strong bonds and patrol the borders of their territory, meaning captive males feel more secure when there are at least three of them).

-At least four adult females and either an equal or female skewed adult gender balance (adult females act as a stabilising influence against the males and their displays).

-A range of ages, including infants and juveniles (natural enrichment for the whole troop).

With four adult males; four adult females; two juveniles and an infant; Monarto Zoo is the definition of an ideal troop. It’s so good to see them recover from the death of two of their females and an infant a few years ago, and rebuild their troop with the import of two new females and the subsequent birth of an infant. Hopefully we will see more infants from Zombi and Galatea in the not too distant future.

This depents of course also on the size and structure of the enclosure, I've seen enclosures where I would't put even 2 adult males together !
I guess however that Monarto's enclosure is large enough to house its group.

Zebra Foal

A foal was born to Gina on 07/03/2019:

It was sadly euthanised on 08/03/2019:

One of the articles expressed uncertainty over the paternity, implying that more than one stallion is kept with herd. Zebra stallions have been known to practice infanticide against offspring that aren’t there own, so maybe this was a factor? The zoo have stated the foal was likely injured by one of the adults (though not necessarily intentionally injured).

Monarto Zoo has welcomed 1.1 baby nyala. One of the females is an experienced mother, who had a male calf in June 2018. Monarto’s trio of nyala have been very productive!
It’s great to see that the two Australian zoos that hold nyala have had very successful breeding results.

This should be good for the smaller regional zoos as the numbers build up excess animals can filter out to form more herds in time!

The latest issue of the zoos magazine arrive today with some unexpected news.

Construction is almost complete on Monartos new lemur walkthrough exhibit. It is described as covering 3 1/2 acres and is set to house ring tailed lemur, Aldabra giant tortoise and potentially African crested porcupine.

While it says it is almost complete no opening date is listed.

That's intersting. I had my first visit to Monarto last month. So much potenial there. Will this be another pay extra money to enter type exhibit like the 360 lion cage?

I guess you would not have to pay extra for entry. ;)

Having been in Melbourne's lovely free walk-through lemur enclosure, I'll be greatly disappointed if Monarto charges extra for theirs.. :p

I think Wellington Zoo will be taking close note of these walk through lemur exhibits and the public's engagement with them. They're rumoured to be designing/building one in the near future; likely in place of the Hamdaryas baboon exhibit (a great loss to the zoo in my opinion).

Chimp update from the zoos Facebook - Zombi is pregnant. Baby expected sometime in September

That’s great news. :) It’s exciting that Monarto’s troop are growing fast; they are doing an excellent job sustaining a breeding situation there. Hope would certainly enjoy a playmate. :D

That's fantastic news! Great experience for Zuri too, who is fast approaching reproductive age herself. Maybe it'll be another boy; a brother to one day support Enzi in the alpha role.

Monarto Zoo is set to get a new entrance with plans being looked over this week by the state government member. Funding has been provided to allow the project to proceed by the state and federal governments.

I've included the best news piece I can find but details are still a bit scarce in regards to the project.

This week Tony Pasin MP and Intro Architecture Pty Ltd Director Terry Boxall sat down with our Chief Executive Elaine and poured over the awesome plans for the new $16.8 million Monarto Zoo Visitor Centre. We're so thrilled that our exciting visions are becoming a reality and can't wait to welcome you all through our new Visitor Centre doors in the future.
