Monarto Safari Park Monarto Zoo News 2015

Devastating news for Monarto Zoo. It's been a tough couple of years for their chimpanzee troop, and of course the staff who care for them.

I feel like Boon was given the best chance by his surrogate mother, Zombi, and the dedicated care from his keepers. They all did the best they could for him.

I've been impressed how open Monarto Zoo have been with us, the public. Their nothing to hide approach to the media and visitors is a welcome change from some of the other zoos in Australia.
 
"Last week we sadly said goodbye to two much loved members of our zoo family – Skukusa the Cheetah and Tizga the Fennec Fox. Many visitors would have fond memories of Skukusa from the very popular Cheetah Interactive animal experience, where participants had the opportunity to interact with Skukusa and his brothers to learn about the plight of Africa’s most endangered big cat. He had been having some age related health issues recently and his quality of life had deteriorated, so the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanise him. Tizga’s passing came unexpectedly for zoo keepers when he was found last Wednesday morning unwell and passed away quickly before he could be diagnosed or assisted. Vets are currently awaiting results from the post-mortem. Skukusa and Tizga will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved them."

Skukuza (born at Monarto) was the last of the hand-reared trio of brothers left at Monarto (Askari died 2013 and Tsotsie died 2014). Tizga was born at Taronga Zoo and sired offspring at Adelaide Zoo before moving to Monarto.

Tizga wasn't on public display at Monarto was he?
 
Zombi's son has been named 'Enzi.' The name means powerful in Swahili. I was hoping for a Z name but it's not a bad name considering Enzi will most likely be the alpha male down the track.

African Lion male Leroy has passed away.

We are sad to announce the passing of one of our most beloved Monarto Zoo family members, Leroy the African Lion.
Leroy, who at 16 years old was our eldest male lion and he passed away quietly overnight after ongoing treatment for health issues.
He was born in 1999 at Mogo Zoo in NSW and arrived at Monarto in 2003 with his brother Levi. They were an impressive site leading our then newly formed pride which has grown to become one of the biggest in Australia.
Monarto keepers will keep a close eye on the rest of the pride and have advised that Leroy’s young nephew Inkosi has taken the leadership role within the pride for now.

Pricilla (Orana Wildlife Park) was born 1999 at Mogo Zoo

Sheeka (Orana Wildlife Park) was born 1999 at Mogo Zoo

Any of these animals related? (except for Levi and Leroy of course)...
