Monarto Safari Park Monarto Zoo News 2016

Have any other zoos in the region shown an interest in crested porkies? Would work well for most savannah exhibits, and breed like crazy.

There are porcupines at several NZ zoos, some housed with Meerkats, so presumably Australian zoos could do something similar. I don't think NZ has any surplus though, so imports to Australia will likely be from outside the region.

I think there are several Australian zoos interested.

You'd think porcupines would be prolific (and I know they can be) but NZ hasn't had much luck at all in breeding - very few bred in all the years they have been kept in the country. It is mostly down to bad luck I suppose.

Six barbary sheep have been born. Monarto Zoo has also confirmed on Facebook that they are looking to get nyala next year.

(I realise off-topic for Monarto...) Where have the radiated tortoises moved to?

And incase anyone wasnt sure they will be north african crested"s
Study done by Small mammal TAG in UK (or at least where I heard the results) showed that very few individuals of the European captive crested porcupine population proved to be Northerns. Differences are apparently in the skull shape. Suspect that Australasia will end up with Southerns.

Yeah i righto i think they are supposed to be northern but with that information theres a fair chance their southern

They have gone to where the fenecc foxes were previously located and the fennecs are moving to another zoo
Where did they end up housing the fennecs? In the small exhibit in front of giraffe/zebra that has house lovebirds/serval? Strange place for tortoises if so.

Pity they couldn't rehouse the foxes within the zoo. Particularly when you have a good noc house...
