Monarto Safari Park Monarto's new chimpanzee exhibit...

@SilverbackApes: when you visit the new chimpanzee enclosure can you take a lot of photos please? Also, I'd love to know exactly how many apes are there, as well as the exact size of the exhibit. Judging from early word of mouth the habitat is enormous!

The female chimps are coming from Burger's Zoo
I'll definitley take a load of photos, presently there are two chimps there, and I think fairly soon two more males from Wellington Zoo are coming then the four females from Burger's.
I've heard that the exhibit is 3000sqm and also 3500sqm so not entirely sure on the size front, shall have to find out

Visited the chimps today, its looking absolutley fantastic :D. I went to Monarto's first ever keeper talk!
Tsotsi for one looks so much happier than he did at Adelaide, out of the two he's dominant and displayed several times today. They won't be going outside until they've settled with Gombe and Boyd(from Wellington Zoo).
Photos will follow...they're still uploading!

Looks good. aficae chimps found int he dry woodland type enviroment as wellas the rainforest?

not really jay - chimps are found in forest-savanna mosaic punctured by gallery forests in certain parts of west africa and many zoos have pretty much run with it.

its not really "savanna" as we think of it, and essentially they are very much rainforest animals. still, i expect that this habitat at monarto will suffice for them quite adequately, (though admittedly i'm not that impressed with the landscaping)

The females definitely haven't arrived yet. I was at the zoo on Thursday and quite a bit of construction was going on behind the male's indoor quarters. I assume this will be for the females?

:)

Very interesting to see a social group being built up from 'stranger' pairs of chimps, like this.
Perhaps they need to get the 4 males together first to free up the 2nd indoor area for the arrival of the 4 females. Will be interesting to watch developments.:)

The males have been all together now for some months.
