Monarto Safari Park Monarto's new chimpanzee exhibit...

thats good, i guess all the zoos ion sa r working over time with cooling down enrichment. Is monarto till closed due to heat?

I guess it would be, I haven't spoken to anyone down there though. The chimps get the air con because it was already there in quarantine, it's not specifically a thing for them. But I would love to see cold rocks used more often.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if there will be any chimps joining those from Adelaide and Hamilton Zoos? Are the males from Hamilton Luka, Lucifer and Mike? I think they are but I'm not sure.

As far as I know, at this stage only the Hamilton boys will be coming, but I don't know their names yet.

It says on the website that there are 8 chimps going to Monarto
so thats:
Fimi and Sanda (from Adelaide Zoo)
Luka, Lucifer and Mike (Hamilton Zoo's three males)
...and there must be another three I don't know of, maybe from Wellington?

I'm getting excited about the opening of this new habitat and recently read that Jane Goodall is going to be opening it. That makes sense with her visit to the area for the APS conference so it should be cool.

I thought I might share a piece I did recently of a chimp while I'm here..

That's a beautiful chimp piece.
The chimps at Monarto Zoo will be a male from Sydney's Taronga Zoo, Two males from Wellington Zoo in New Zealand and once the males have settled they will be joined by four females from Europe and....

TSOTSI!!!!! Yay! Adelaide Zoo's male isn't going to NZ he's going to Monarto Zoo:)

Do you have zoo mixed/generic chimpanzees in Oz or can they be assigned to wildborn founders and thus either 1 of the 3 recognised subspecies?

I had a discussion with the Taronga chimp keepers (many moons ago) and it was their thoughts that some of the original individuals were from wild stock and could be differentiated to subspecies. Certainly some individuals showed the dark mask typical of Westerns (I think). I would suspect however that the vast majority of individuals are now of mixed/unknown ancestry.

Not sure about the NZ situation.

what style of enclosure is being built at Monarto, is it a cage or an open hot wired enclosure?

I believe most chimps in NZ are of mixed ancestry too. I don't know of any zoos that hold long established groups of Chimps where this isn't the case?

Are there in fact any Zoos (worldwide) that keep just purebred groups of the West African chimp, and if so, where?

some zoos in contintental europe have, or are moving towards managing pure sub-species groups of chimpanzee, but in Australsia all our chimps are of very much a mixed bag.
Taronga has a few founder animals left but as Sydneys well established program (from which many other zoo colonies are related) is moving well into the third/fourth generation stage with no sub-species specific management ever the likelihood of Australasian zoos ever having pure chimp groups is low.

Will be open hot wired, too big to enclose.

Does anyone have any news on how the enclosure and introductions between Tsotsi and Sandali are going? When I was at Monarto a couple of weeks ago it didn't look like the fence was finished (although I was looking from a distance) and I heard the two boys making quite a racket
