Monitor-lizards in captivity

Are the Omaha and Rosamond Gifford holdings new? I never encountered the species at either but my visits are a few years old now.

I don't know how old or new they are. Omaha's exhibit was photographed in 2021; Rosamond Gifford has them listed on their website, and additionally claims that in 2019 they were the first US zoo to hatch them.

To my knowledge, neither of these still exhibit Perentie; Dallas's haven't been seen for a long time, while the enclosure that held LA's animals for a while became a second Komodo enclosure.

My mistake; the Perenties are indeed still on exhibit at LA. They also appear to hold Large-scaled Water Monitor (V. nuchalis).

- Varanus mitchelli : general info : Varanus mitchelli

A very rare species and the only European zoo keeping the species is the Aquazoo Düsseldorf which should have 4 specimens behind the scenes.
In Australia - the home-country of the species - it was ( is ? ) kept at the Perth Zoo which also had the world-first breeding with this species in 2001. An article about this breeding can be found here : file:///C:/Users/PC/Downloads/GaikhorstetalZooBio2009.pdf
In the ZooChat Gallery I wasn't able to find any photos of the Mitchell's monitor.

Thanks to @wstefan we have another new species in the Gallery :

Just discovered that 2 species are missing on my original list:
- Varanus bennetti
- Varanus tsukamotoi
From both species I don't have information about captive holdings and also there are no photo's of these species in our Gallery.
An intresting article in which Varanus bennetti is discribed and also information about Varanus tsukamotoi is given can be found here :

In the ZooChat Gallery I wasn't able to find any photos of the Mitchell's monitor.

In the meantime the situation in European zoos has changed a little. Mai 2021 a small group of Mitchell's monitors was confistigated and the Zoo of Cologne took some of the animals into its collection. During January and March 2022 mating and egg-laying took place and 4 1/2 months later the first young hatched. Untill now 18 young have been hatched ( among them a twin ( 2 young from 1 egg - a first for this species ) and a further egg is still in the incubator. 8 of the young have already been send to other zoos.
Also the Zoo of Frankfurt seem to have already been succesfull with the species :).

Lets take a look at the species still not represented in our Gallery ( and what we can do about it ;) ) :
- V. bangonorum
- V. baritji
- V. bitatawa
- V. bogerti
- V. bushi
- V. cerambonensis
- V. dalubhasa
- V. douarrha
- V. eremius
- V. finschi
- V. flavescens *
- V. glebopalma
- V. hamersleyensis
-V. juxtindicus *
- V. keithhornei *
- V. kingorum
- V. lirungensis
- V. mabitang
- V. mitchelli *
- V. nesterovi
- V. obor
- V. palawanensis
- V. rasmusseni
- V. samarensis *
- V. semiremex
- V. semotus
- V. telenestes
- V. togianus
- V. yemenensis
- V. yuwonoi *
- V. zagorum
That makes 31 species still missing in our Gallery ! However.. there is hope because the species marked with an * are still kept / were untill recently kept at collections which have been visited by ZooChatters so maybe they have still photos of these species but didn't upload them :

For Varanus flavescens its already a little longer ago that Rotterdam kept it but still, its possible that somebody has taken pictures of it.
- Varanus juxtindicus was kept untill at least 2018 at the Animal Education Center at Hull
- Varanus keithhornei is / was kept at the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park
- Varanus mitchelli is / was kept at the Aquazoo Düsseldorf and at Perth Zoo
- Varanus samarensis is kept ( and resently even bred ) at a number of collections in the Philippines
- Varanus yuwonoi is kept at Cologne Zoo
So I guess it would ( should ! ) be possible to fill at least some of the gaps of missing species in our Gallery.....

@WhistlingKite24 uploaded a photo of V.eremius in 2022 at Taronga Zoo, I don’t think it has been mentioned here yet. This species was present in the old reptile house and is also currently displayed at the new ARC.
