Paignton Zoo Monkey Heights

It was actually a hernia operation and the macaque is doing well and is back with the troop.
 
Newquay zoo's guide book confused me when i visited last easter, the monkeys are still in the three wire mesh cages but the guide book says they have western colobus, as well as buffy capuchins, diana monkey and mangabey's

What's this rumour about female Gorillas?
 
Poor keepers - crowds of us going round pestering them!
I've heard nothing about female gorillas.
 
Am I right in thinking the Eastern b/w Colobus are just males nowadays, or are there still females in the group too?

And the Dianas are now 2 males, three females?
 
Yes, the b/w colobus are all males. The females all died suddenly within a few days of each other some time ago.
The Diana monkeys are:
Charlie m born Port Lympne April 1998
Kasai f born Edinburgh July 1997
Akia f born Paignton February 2006
Manu m born Paignton June 2007
Dede f born Paignton August 2008
(Those new signs are really useful!)
 
Any idea why all the female b/w colobus died so suddenly ? The group must have lived and bred for many years in the old Monkey House .
 
I think it was due to a virus but I don't know for sure. At that time, the females were in Monkey Heights and the males up near the Red Pandas (the former macaque house).

Thanks for the Diana details. Have they brought in these signs for all the Monkey groups?(apart from the Hamadryas obviously!!)

If so could you list the details of the surviving Swamp Monkeys?
 
The signs are gradually spreading round the zoo. The Swamp Monkeys are:
Mirek m born Warsaw April 1999
Laguna f born Mulhouse, France June 1995
 
Thankyou. I don't rate their chances with the Swamp monkeys very highly with just this one pair.:(

Its interesting how the Diana Monkeys didn't(?) breed in the old Monkey House- although they could have been old enough but have done so successfully since. I wonder if they did breed in the old cage but failed to rear any babies or whether the move just coincided with them reaching maturity?
 
Laguna doesn't seem at all keen on Mirek when she's in season though they are happy enough usually. Comparing her to the deceased females, from memory, she looks quite small. I don't know if she bred in France.
A quick look through my collection of annual reports shows that in 1997 a male Diana monkey arrived and a female died, in 1998 there was just one male who left in 2004 when 1.1 arrived. This pair must be Charlie and Kasai.
 
According to Isis there's only 4.9 Swamp Monkeys left in Europe. Mulhouse appear to have only a single female left now. Paris- two females, no male. Seems like there needs to be some reorgansiation- a pity more females don't come to Paignton as the males are in such short supply. But I think they are doomed in Europe really.

Dianas- I guess the current pair were in the old house a shorter time than I had previously thought and only started to breed after the move. Does your report say where the previous male went to?
 
The Zoo of Karlsruhe, Germany, is keeping Swamp Monkeys (Allenopithecus nigroviridis), too. Karlsruhe does not participate to the ISI-System....
