Monkey Sanctuary, Cornwall

Sorry if this is old news....The monkey sanctuary in cornwall is launching an appeal to build accomodation for some patas monkeys and barbary macaques rescued from a uk sanctuary/park that has recently closed.

It states on the monkey sanctuary website that the monkeys had to be removed from there previous home quickly before the bank seized the land where they were housed. And that the collection had closed as a result of the credit crunch.

Its interesting to see that the monkey sanctuary are expanding to provide homes for other species of primates besides the wooly's and capuchins.

Anybody have any ideas which closed collection the primates originated from?
 
Begelly Countryside Gardens in Pembrokeshire has patas and barbary macaques , also rhesus and common marmoset . I have not heard of problems there but just tried without success to get onto their web-site .

:eek: i really hope they havent closed, i visted there once and they are very nice people
 
Thanks bele, you are right about the primates coming from Begelly Countryside Gardens...i must say i hadnt heard of this collection before?
I wonder where the Rhesus and Marmosets went?
 
All very sad - the barbary macaques are quite young and were confiscated in France then sent to the UK because the French rescue organisation had nowhere suitable for them . Now they are having to be 'rescued' once again . The two patas look quite old .

Folly Farm , just up the road from Begelly , were due to receive a group of barbary macaque from a Dutch rescue organisation .

As Tigerlemurguy says , the people at Begelly were very friendly and committed to the care of their monkeys which were housed basically but in very pleasant surroundings .

that is really sad news, i think i have heard of folly farm :confused:
 
I visited many years ago (about 1970) and I am sure we sat around in a big group and the Woolly monkeys (that were free roaming) came and walked across our laps. I might be in Cornwall later this year and thought I would visit.

I assume there is now no visitor,monkey interaction?

They only have 39 monkeys currently. I do not think I will be going. For the same reason I can not visit ZSL - they are less than what they were.

Too sad.
