phew im glad I wasnt going completely mad about the howletts animals :)

tow questions

what type of wolly monkeys where they, becuase monkey world only keeps humbolts

and have you emailed the zoo and ask them?

Do they really state that their monkeys are humboldt's? I can only assume that this is a slightly generous application of classification on the part of monkeyworld or there is maybe some significance in all those disparate groups being in fact subspecific humbolt's being amalgamated at a single institution. I know Kilverstone used to have Humboldts....so it is not inconcievable that there were pure-breds coexisting with generic animals...they are fairly long-lived after all, and the same can be said of spider monkeys in terms of the mixes some zoos keep.

But the remaining twycross group is listed on ISIS as 'hybrid'. So either Monkey World was chosen as a serious EEP holder for a Woolly subspecies, or else it's all just hot air and the Woolly Monkey EEP recommends no distinctions. Does anyone know the EEP guidelines for Woolly monkey subspecies?

Not really sure, but i quite certain they say they are "humbolts"

the latin name on the website is: Lagothrix lagotricha

I know when I was in Apnheul the curator was telling me why they stopped free-ranging them and that their animals were hybrids so that would suggest that the animals monkey world got are too :)

maybe some are hybrids and some are not

(hence the two seperate groups???)

maybe one is for hybrids, one for humbolts (this is one way of seeing it i guess)

New baby on the way

I have recently visited Monkey World a few days ago (I am one of many of Hsiao-Ning's adoptive parents) and during the Orang-Utan keeper talk, she informed us that Amy (Gordon's mum) is pregnant again and only has a few more months to go! Hoorah!:D

Great! I visited last week and they didn't mention it then! Let's hope she doesn't reject this one.

Is Tuan the father?? I always got the impression that she was kept in a group where her son, Gordon, was the only male. May have just mis read the info on the website tho

Yeah I thought she was kept with Gordon but it appears not anymore. Gordon is kept with Hsiao-Lan, Hsiao-Quai and Kai. Yes, Tuan is the father. I hope Amy doesn't reject this one. Apparently she's grumpier than ever lately and has learnt how to earth the electric fence!

wow is this really true?
if so then congrats amy and hope she rears it herself
which keeper told you?

amy was with gordon yesterday, but over the last few weeks she has been spending lots of time with tuan

i watched the Monkey life programme last night and they showed Susie giving birth to her second infant. On the monkey world website there is no mention of a second baby being born in the group. Is this just down to the website not being updated or has something happened to the infant since the programme was filmed?

they never update the website, its actually really annoying!

the new baby is called bart and is now doing fine!

For some reason i'm quite surprised they didn't call it Jim in memory of Jim Cronin but i suppose it may have been a bit too upsetting for Alison plus there is another chimp called Jimmy at the park. Anyone else think Bobby would have been a better name??? :D

Is Susie an orang utan? Bart is an awful name for any primate if you ask me...

Susie is a chimp, last time she gave birth it settled the group down, so they have let herget pregnant again to keep the group more settled (or thats there theory)

Shoot me down in anthropomorphic flames, but my theory about Amy's alleged grumpiness is that she doesn't believe she's an orangutan and that Jeremy is the love of her life. All of her sabotage attempts, which must take some planning and show how intelligent she is, are aimed at getting Jeremy's attention. Bless her! :)
