Any news on the Gibbons they hold? They could do with the other two pairs of Golden-cheeked gibbons breeding, thats if they are not going to send them back to south east Asia! :(

rafael has now left monkey world. the other three (vietta, tito and alex) are quite disturbed. kim (zoey & jake's baby) and tien (peanut & pung-yo's first baby) will also be introduced to each other when they are older.

Sorry but how can Gibbons be disturbed?

they came from the pet trade and show stereotypical behaviour. for example tito bangs his head off the enclosure.

Did Tien not go to Vietnam with the rest of his family then?

They have not gone. The whole family may not go, one possibility is that Tien would be paired with the female Kim, both are infants raised with their mothers/families and they would go. Kim's father Jake is, however, from LA Zoo I believe and is part of the breeding programme so I don't understand whether that could affect that proposition. Kim's mother Zoey was rescued from the pet trade in Taiwan.

As far as i can understand all Golden-cheeked gibbons at MW are part of the EEP.

So any move would be needed to be agreed with the studbook holder.

Reading the news stories on their website made it sound like they had already gone.

As I mentioned as a possibility a few weeks ago two of the wooly monkeys are confirmed as pregnant - Yarima and Piquita - both have raised their own babies previously. I'm afraid I don't know where they each originate from.

Most of the orignal Wooly Monkey's came from Apenheul Primate Park in Holland in the 1990's. Monkey World have sent and had several females from Twycross Zoo over the years.

Hi i'm new to zoochat but have been visiting monkeyworld for a while.I have complaints about monkeyworld,i find the staff not very polite, when they walk past you they tend to look down at you,and for us paying visitors that is something which is bad.
The animals are lovely however, they all look superb and healthy.

Hi Jennifer, maybe they want to avoid the awkward question about the animals that are supposed to part of the EEP, yet they seem to act independently?

i have always found the staff at monkey world to be very helpful and friendly. any time i have asked them questions they are more than willing to answer them and chat to other visitors.

Rude Staff

Unfortunately they were more than likely taught by the Jim Cronin "I am always right" academy.

I have always found Monkey World staff helpful and polite - even when I asked the dreaded EEP question. They have designated times for talks and questions when you can ask whatever you want. The rest of the time they are working. In general, keepers don't walk around smiling at visitors and, if I was one, I'd probably avoid eye contact so that I could get on with my job!

it is hard to get thing done if you are always asked questions it sometime better to keep your head down and get on with the job

but the time i have been the keeper have been alway happy to help you just have to be a bit understanding it is there work place. and you can always go to a talk and talk to the keepers

For the record, the male baby orangutan born to Gordon and Hsiao-Quai is called 'Jin', which is Chinese for 'handsome'.

I saw his picture in the latest Monkey World newletter, he looks a lovely little boy and his mum seems to be doing a great job at the moment.
