I have uploaded the guenon picture I took (I was frustratingly in a rush to meet someone at that point so couldn't linger and take as many as I would have done otherwise.)

The Hedgehog, I heard when I was there that the last two elephants from Twycross are going to Monkey World instead of Blackpool Zoo...

Chimpanzee female Peggy, in Hananya's group, died recently of a heart condition. She was believed to be in her late twenties.

Oh my goodness!!!! How devastating! She was 29 years old (1989). What a loss. Peggy arrived at the sanctuary as a two year old infant from Peggy Templer's halfway house in Barcelona (Spain). As the oldest female in the group, Peggy was such a source of comfort and reassurance for the younger females in what is today Hananya's community and as the oldest chimp she had so much experience in politics. She was Cherri's right hand woman and I can only imagine the devastation the troop must feel. Another thing clear is that the chimps seem to be succumbing to heart issues. Her son Ben, Paddy, Tikko, Evie, Alberto all also died from heart-related problems?

Heart issues are known to be a huge problem for captive apes (especially males). I’d recommend looking up the Great Ape Heart Project; they are doing a lot of research with the hope of better prevention.
 
I visited Monkey World today for the first time in several years, the primary reason for my visit was to see the recently arrived white-throated guenons.

My attention was drawn to two “mystery” marmosets which had arrived in February 2013 and which I hadn’t seen before. According to the label:-

· "Their appearance is unlike anything we have seen at the park and, despite consultation with marmoset and tamarin specialists, their species is unidentifiable".

The label then adds that they are probably hybrids.

One looked similar to a silvery marmoset although it lacked the typical dark tail and I have added a photograph of this individual to the gallery.

I know that there are several ZooChatters who visit Monkey World regularly so I wondered if anybody has more up-to-date information about the identity of these marmosets.
 
The mystery marmosets, Brass and Evi, are still suspected to be hybrids of some kind.
 
Does anyone know if Ash the chimpanzee will be put into an adult group or moved on to another animal collection due to the European endangered animals breeding program. Also are any monkeys/ apes being transferred or arriving this year. Also how are Hannayas chimps copeing after the sad demise of Peggy?

Monkey World is not involved in a breeding program for chimpanzees, and the subspecies of most individuals is unknown. Ash is already in an adult group- at 12 she’s the youngest member of Sally’s group; they are all adults.

Bornean orangutan male Jin is moving to Dublin Zoo in the near future. I suspect it won’t be long before Silvestre (Sumatran) moves on to a new home as well.

Many thanks for your response; I had hoped that there might be further details available as to exactly what species they were hybrids between.
