Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre Monkey World news

Visited yesterday for the first time in a few years. Notable bits of intrest.

- Woodland Capuchins were confined just to the house and back run as new individuals were being introduced. Keepers on site all day to watch the group

- New series of Monkey Life is currently being filmed

- New building going up opposite Capuchin Woodland troupe

- They have completely dismantled the old enclosure next to the stump tails that used to have the Patas Monkeys

- Hanayas viewing platform and lemur walk through closed due to covid and social distancing. Little dissapointing as makes it hard to see the parks biggest chimp group

Possibly the ones from Borth!

Mica the Patas monkey died not that long ago. She was the only Patas monkey (Sissy-Jo, the companion they had brought in for her after she had arrived died a long time ago).

They have completely dismantled the old enclosure next to the stump tails that used to have the Patas Monkeys

This enclosure is still standing, in fact, and once again contains Patas Monkeys :p per my visit today, the last two from Borth are there.

Just an update on a few of the deaths that have hit Monkey World in recent months:

Ella the Lar Gibbon seems to have passed away in September. I believe the park now only holds 0.1 Lar Gibbons (Kitty) who lives with a male Agile Gibbon.

Jimmy the chimp was put to sleep this year due to heart complications.

Zoe, another of the first chimps, passed away in the Spring. Both Jimmy and Zoe were around 38 years old.

Mica the elderly Patas Monkey passed away at the start of the year. The park briefly no longer held this species until they received their two from Borth.

I know three of these have already been mentioned here but I thought I’d add them in alongside the addition of Ella the Lar Gibbon who doesn’t seem to have been mentioned yet.

Gypsy the chimpanzee also died this year. 3 stump tailed macaques have passed away. As an adoptive parent of this group I asked which 3 died and they won't tell me. If anyone here knows

I saw the adoption page when they were down to 6. Their names were listed, it didn’t include Sam and Charley. Next time I looked it just said 5 with no names. I’ve seen a photo of Toto since then so it’s not him

Sam, Toto, Freddie, Noreen, Kelly, Sylvie, Charley and Floh I believe were the group of 8 they had until recently.

Sam was definitely one of the older members of the group (over 30), not sure about Charley. I wouldn’t be surprised if the other was Floh, she was nearly 40.

Hi I’ve been looking at the online Ape Rescue Chronicles. In 2019 Maximilian and Tya moved to a small Wildlife Park. Can anyone tell me which Wildlife Park this was? Also Silvestre from the Orangutan Nursery and Awan from Tuan’s group, are getting to breeding age. Due to this is anyone expecting them to depart Monkey World. @Pertinax (The Ape Expert) and @Gigit you may be able to assist with me enquiries. If you cannot can someone else come to my aid?

What are they, marmosets?

It's anyone's guess! Years ago no one would have expected Hsiao Ning, Dinda, Kai or Jin to leave (ie born of Monkey world parents) so Awan may well move on. She is the only offspring of her wild-born mother.

Not sure of Silvestre's desirability as a breeder, he's apparently a lovely animal to have around, but he's huge now for the nursery.

Silvestre is a grandson of the old Bristol Zoo pair Anne and her second partner Adam. Adam in particular has only one surviving offspring- Silvestre's mother at Santander,in Spain, though he has older female siblings still living there I believe. So genetically he's quite valuable. He's not owned by Monkeyworld but was placed there for safe-keeping/raising, by EEP. If a breeding situation now becomes available for him then I presume he will move at some stage. There are currently few Sumatrans in the UK(sadly) so unless somewhere starts a new group, he's more likely to return to Europe. He isn't a baby anymore, in fact he's the third oldest Sumatran male currently living in the UK, after Chester and Jersey.

@OrangePerson I apologise for not being clear,Maximilian and Tiya are Marmosets.

In regards to Awan I would love her to remain at Monkey World. If this isn’t possible Awan should move to another facility within Europe. I know Dudley Zoo only have a couple of Females. As Dudley has just had a baby it would be sensible for Awan to move in. I say this as Dudley’s male is a proven breeder. Furthermore Dudley have plenty of room for an additional Female. It’s not very realistic for reasons that @Gigit has previously declared, but I would like Awan to move to Paignton. With Gambira passing away there is theoretically space for another Female. In my opinion only having a trio of Orangutans is a waste of Paignton’s vast enclosure. I agree 7 Orangutans was a bit much hence the relocation of Mali and Tatau. Despite this I think Paignton’s enclosure could easily house 4 Orangutans. In regards to Silvestre I wonder if he’ll permanently reside at Monkey World. Years ago there were rumours about a Sumatran Orangutan enclosure being built. If this happens additional Females could come and join Silvestre as breeding mates.

I think it unlikely that Monkey World would start a Sumatran group although they did in the (distant) past say Sylvestre has a home for life if he doesn’t get sent somewhere by the EEP. It would be a logistic nightmare to keep him, they’d need a whole new enclosure.

Two chimpanzees (1.1) from Buenos Aires EcoParque have arrived at Monkey World.

Mother and son pair Sasha (F, 24) and Kangoo (M, 15) were originally housed at the old Buenos Aires Zoo, until they were transferred to the EcoParque in 2016 when the zoo was closed. Buenos Aires EcoParque has decided to concentrate on native Argentinian animals, so a new home had to be found for the pair. Sasha and Kangoo are currently in the process of being introduced to Bryan's group, which consists of dominant male Bryan (M, 19), as well as other chimpanzees Ash (F, 17), Lulu (F, 28), Naree (F, 26), and Rodders (M, 17).
