Without knowing, I doubt their lines are represented at all in the UK which only has the two groups at Chester and Jersey, plus the two males at Port Lympne. They might be from well -represented lines in Europe though. Neither do I know if genetically they would make suitable partners for breeding, though I believe they are unrelated.

Bulu Mata's maternal grandparents are Puluh and Subis at Chester Zoo so he's closely related to all of their current Sumatran Orangutans. I heard s PCS staff saying on my last visit in October that they want Bulu and Reike to leave together as they have a very strong bond

That's interesting. They are obviously a bonded pair now so should stay together wherever they go. It would be nice if MW was able to keep them on though

In that case they would make a good ‘starter’ pair for a new holder in the UK, like Port Lympne, if Monkey World can’t keep them. We desperately need more UK Sumatran holders.

Its strange that Europe is brimming over with them, yet in UK they are in such a minority to Borneans.

Formerly Bristol, Twycross, Dudley (Bellevue- closed),Flamingo Park and Colchester all had them, though only the first two had pairs, the rest had mainly single individuals back in the days when selection of the species was more random depending on what animals the dealers sent. Jersey's 'Dagu' was also a single animal formerly, living in very unsuitable conditions privately in Essex. Another male 'Adam' was the same animal in several different UK zoo homes (Bellevue,Flamingo,Colchester,Bristol) before finally moving to Spain. He was also the grandfather of Monkeyworld's 'Silvestre' now at Basel.

Port Lympne's current two males were a 'rescue' from the overcrowded Zurich Zoo group. But they might be tempted to go into them in a bigger way?

Sumatran orangutan was originally planned for Bristol’s new site. Shame it probably won’t happen now, but it would be fantastic if they did.
