Monterey Bay Aquarium Monterey Bay Aquarium News

The aquarium is working on a new way of taking a census of the fish in the ocean using DNA from cells they find in the water. They are testing the new method at the aquarium because they know what they have to check the tests against. It sounds like a neat theory if it proves practical.

This is a technique that is being trialled in many different environments, mostly aquatic and soil, as a way of determining what species are present. Unfortunately it can only do that if you have known DNA from all species that could potentially be present, which is not very easy - unless you are only interested in a small subset of species (e.g. fish or worms, etc) or you already know exactly what is present, which is why Monterey Aquarium was used.

Oh no, just a boring Black-footed penguin...!

When I saw that there are news in this thread, I thought that they had another rescued Great White Shark on exhibit. Too bad:(

Afaik: unfortunately yes. But there is still hope. I bet, if a great white shark had to be rescued, they wont let it die without trying to safe its life.

Yeah, what I meant was, that they don't intend to capture more. I could easily see them doing a rescue and eventual release, no reason not to.
