Great news! It is great that at least one calf has survived so far. In animals that have twins very rarely (elephants, hippos, rhinos, giraffes ...) often does not survive even one calf.
 
It's very interesting that years will sometimes go by without any ZooChat updates about this zoo, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. Montgomery Zoo resigned from AZA in 2013, mainly due to issues with the zoo's management of elephants, but the AZA website currently lists Montgomery Zoo as an accreditation applicant and the inspection is upcoming. I find it intriguing that the zoo, a current ZAA member, will quietly seek AZA membership after an absence of 8 years.

Little is said about Montgomery Zoo because of the quirks of geography. All the Alabama based Zoochatters I am aware of are from North Alabama. Depending on where exactly you are in North Alabama there are closer accredited Zoos in Birmingham, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Knoxville, Nashville, even Memphis.

Compound that fact with people from the Northern half of the state only go to Montgomery for state politics or stopping for gas on the way to the beach.

I mean I grew up loving and visiting zoos all over the Southeast yet I didn't even know Montgomery had a zoo until I posted here.

Haradari is the fifth successful birth of the species at the Montgomery Zoo since 2016. He is the second calf of Asali, but is her first with Nile, who now has four offspring.

The baby hippo lives in a special exhibit with his mother in the zoo’s South American realm, located near Monkey Island.
 
The Montgomery Zoo announced yesterday that they have opened a new snow leopard exhibit:
With great enthusiasm and anticipation, the Montgomery Zoo and Mann Wildlife Learning Museum is proud to announce the official opening of a new snow leopard exhibit featuring Sierra. Other 2022 News:

On January 20th, the zoo announced that a (1.0) common chimpanzee named Chester passed away at age 39 on January 17th due to natural causes.

On April 8th, the zoo announced its next big project is replacing its old Reptile Building with a new one, which will have species such as Indian gharial, Komodo dragon, king cobra, and Galapagos tortoise. The new building will be located near the jaguar and ocelot exhibits.

Best of luck to Montgomery on this endeavor… The population is overrun with males; however, bachelor groups in this species never end up working out.

I didn't know they had an African Forest Area but from what I understand they got rid of their Asian Hoofstock. The Lechwe are in that area.
