From Moonlits Facebook-site :

"Orange-bellied Parrot end of breeding season update!
We have had a successful breeding season with our captive population of OBPs, with 48 new juveniles produced in our breeding facility from 17 pairs.
Sixteen of these juveniles have already been released at Melaleuca where they have joined the wild flock. It is very satisfying and rewarding to breed these Critically Endangered parrots and to be able to provide birds for release to help boost the wild population, as well as maintain an insurance population against extinction in the wild."

I love what is being achieved withthe orange-bellied parrot. It's been a good year in Tassie so far.

Bits and pieces from Moonlit Sanctuary's social media page:

*two female Squirrel Gliders have been born to the zoo's colony.

*a Moonlit-bred Orange-bellied Parrot was the first bird to return to Tasmania following the migration: "The annual return of migrating Orange-bellied Parrots is a bit like waiting for Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race winners. These little birds can battle rough weather during their two day return flight, and there is a lot of joy when they finally arrive in Tasmania safely. The first sighting this year is Green E Yellow, a captive bred bird from Moonlit that was released as part of a juvenile release in 2019. Considering the recent north-westerly gusts it likely had a strong tailwind to aid its return!"

*a Bush Stone-Curlew recently hatched.

*lots of joeys among the Tammar Wallabies, Tasmanian Pademelons and Red-necked Wallabies.

*a set of new reptile enclosures have been constructed at Moonlit. Signage seen on one of the photos shows Carpet Python, Spotted Tree Monitor and Black-headed Python.

*the new male Yellow-bellied Glider from Taronga has now been introduced to the female successfully: "A few months ago, we introduced Tally, our new male Yellow-bellied Glider that came to us from New South Wales. After serving his quarantine period, he joined Shy, our female Yellow-bellied Glider, in the hope they would create a great bond and join in on the managed breeding program the species are a part of. Well, we can confirm the two have settled in nicely together and have created a lovely bond as you can see with the two cuddling in their nest box."

A few updates from their social media page:

*a Regent Honeyeater recently hatched: "With the help of spider's webbing to construct the perfect nest, our pair of Regent Honeyeaters have successfully hatched and raised one perfect little chick."

*the first Orange-bellied Parrots of the season are starting to hatch: "We are so excited to finally share the long-awaited news that the first Orange-bellied Parrots chicks of 2021 have started to hatch at Moonlit Sanctuary. With the season still relatively early more eggs are expected to be laid and hatch in the coming weeks. This photo was taken during a routine nest box check to ensure mums, eggs and chicks are all doing well."

Very best wishes for a happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year from all at Moonlit Sanctuary! We are closed today but open again tomorrow at 9am.
