Giant Otter Birth
Panambi gave birth to cubs on Tuesday 29th March, Manoki is a proud dad and Simuni and Akuri are being very good big brothers. That area of the park has been shut off currently to give the family some peace and quiet, however there is a tv screen in our shop of the otters in the den.

Sorry could someone move this under the Chestnut Centre please

Oh, this is brilliant news! Looks like Chestnut have got a good pair on their hands.

My friend who sponsors Panambi said the boys were already spoken for last year but didn't say where!
I wonder how many there are. Can't wait to go see the new ones, I hope there's a girl, the female didn't survive last time.

Dear me, Duisburg also has had a litter early this year, just as Dortmund. Soon Europe will be overflowing with giant otters! :D

I would prefer to see Giant Otters in every collection to the ever-present Meercats !

The giant otters are back on show. This years cubs are a male and a female.

A new litter has been born: Two pups, now a week old and said to be doing well. The family is off show again following the latest birth. Fingers crossed for success this time round...

Not such positive news... 1:0 was found dead on Monday. Believed to have been injured by one of the older siblings. Remaining cub has been sexed as a female as is said to be doing ok atm

Update on the remaining cub from Chestnuts facebook page:

Giant Otter Update.
After all the recent up set with loosing some of the Cubs we have been regularly weighing the little female and as you can see she is now a little chunk. Last week she weighed 730g and this week she is 986g. Lets hope Panambi continues to be a good mum and the cub keeps growing at this rate.

Bad news again....

from Chestnut's Facebook today:

I am not sure I can find the right words. Our lovely, healthy Giant otter cub has died. We tried for over an hour to revive her but it was not to be.

The pm suggests she may have drowned possibly as a result of over exuberant playing (this is purely a guess).
I am sure, I do not need to tell you the deep pain and shock felt by us all especially her 2 keepers.

On Thursday night, I watched the family playing in the evening sunshine and she was swimming with Panambi's nose under her tail to help her along.

This morning the whole Giant otter family are very quiet - no calling to each other, no playing. Just food, swim and lying about - I am in no doubt they grieve as much as we do for the loss of their young one

Thoughts are with everyone at the park :(

Very sad :( I made my first visit there only yesterday and all seemed to be OK. The path to the giant otters was closed off but they were very active and vocal.

More otter news from the facebook page
"On Friday, Kaituma our young male Giant Otter was transported to his new home at our New Forest WildLife Park. We decided to move him as he has grown into a large otter and he has been seen arguing with his father Manoki who is smaller.
Should Panambi have more cubs we feel they would have a better chance with him out of the equation as he was very jealous of the cubs last time.
Eventually, when Akuri goes to Trinidad he will be reunited with his older brother Simuni who will keep him in check.
We continue to wait for Defra to issue the documents for the transfer and Trinidad Zoo are being very patient.
