4 zebras die at Greater Vancouver Zoo

The quick summary: Four zebras died after having Cape Buffalo introduced to their enclosure, and it is very possible that stress was a major factor.

It's not so much the deaths as the fact that the zoo, apparently, kept the whole affair under wraps for at least four months.

I have E-mailed CAZA's director, and requested that the organization re-evaluate whether GV Zoo deserves CAZA accreditation, let alone operating at all.

I don't normally side with any anti-zoo group or cause, but in this one case I find myself agreeing with the local Humane Society: GV Zoo needs to be shut down before their negligence kills any more animals.

Wow. I was just at the zoo last week and I've posted photos of the cape buffalo in the ZooChat gallery. I was wondering what had happened to all of the zebras as they are still listed on the zoo's map, and they've had zebras for as long as I can remember. It was shocking to see the cape buffalo in the paddock, but this entire affair has been "hush-hush" as nothing has been documented in any newspapers or websites until now. I was also shocked to see a keeper in the buffalo barn, as the two buffalo were not very far away as their stall was being cleaned. The problems continue...

It turns out that the 2 cape buffalo were introduced into the paddock in March, and within hours a zebra died. Then over the next few days the remaining 3 zebras also all died of exertional myopathy. To compound the zoo's misery, the albino black bear (supposedly the only one on the planet in captivity) that died in late 2008 was "stuck while hibernating" and was found deceased at the age of 19. The problems that this zoo has had over the years are enormous.
