Having looked at Bristol zoos website its interesting that their new plans for the new National conservation centre include having Indain rhinos which will make them the 4th UK zoo to hold this species which is good news in breeding terms within the UK, wonder how many more zoos there will end up keeping them,

Lets hope that if the four zoos who will hold them will produce enough babies to stock other zoos within the UK in time

I thought they wanted Black Rhinos there?

Anyway, hold your horses a bit- this place hasn't even been started yet. From what I hear, it sounds like they've only raised a tiny fraction of the money they need to build it so far...

So I'd reckon a good while yet before any Indian rhino appear.

Yes they say they are due to open in 2011 AND yes they do state they are to have rhino in their African section so they might be Blacks, with Indians in their Asian section, lots of info on the site.

Whenever it opens(and provide it does go ahead as planned) I think we can be sure it will be a very 'classy' display. Bristol Zoo nowadays is a high quality collection- though quite small- and no expense is spared in new buildings. So the new environmental park is bound to be a 'high quality' animal display.

I'd be happy to see them have Indian rhino there in due course and I can guarantee they would have no trouble aquiring them....

west midlands had gone as far as securing animals from whipsnade and dvur kralove but the eep commitee put a stop to it

If that's true, its another instance of the EEP stopping a safari park doing something... I can see why the stopped Woburn and their okapis but not really in this case.

Do you think there is a bit of zoo/safari park prejudice?;)

Guys,

It has nothing to do with any zoo/safari competition. Both the Okapi and Indian rhino EEP's assess collections who have put in a request for them before allocating individuals.

Woburn could not meet the requirements both husbandry and exhibit wise. Besides they already participated in the white rhino EEP. In the case of West Midlands they had planned to build a new rhino accomodation, but it was put off and consequently the deal fell through.

Actually i believe they failed to get planning permission for the Rhino house due to concerns from people who live near by.

im confused here, how would rhinos not be allowed when they have elephants and lions which make a lot more noise.

The house was being built along the perimeter fence near some houses and the locals objected i believe, but it could have been the council just getting their own back for them building the new Tiger house before they had approved the buildling of it!!!!!!!!!

That doesn't surprise me. The night quarters for their White Rhino are
very basic and scruffy. The existing night area for the elephants are just dark boxes with a tiny yard- though they are building a new modern house at the moment. So looking at that I can imagine EEP not okaying Indian Rhinos there.
