zoogiraffe seems to indicate that the camels are going in with the rhinos. I don't think a male camel and a male onager would be kept in the same enclosure.

They sort of have there own seperate enclosures anyway, but it would be nice to see a couple more species in that area because it can look quite empty at the moment. The addition of the other two camels might make it feel more full

Just a thought about the cheetah enclosure, on the new map, there is a large white building in the bottom corner closest to the pathway.

Am I right in assuming that this will be a viewing 'dome' of sorts?

Yes, I believe it will glass fronted similar to the tiger trail!

No the camels are staying where they are if they were moving to the be with the Rhinos i would have said they were going on the Asian Plains exhibit, the place where they are now is the Asian Steppe.

Yes i did think it would be strange for them to go on the asian plains.

just a quick question, whats happening with the blackbuck and brow antlered deer, are they styaing there or are they leaving for a new enclosure or just leaving the collection all together. Cant say i care too much about the balckbuck but i think it would be a shame if the deer left.

No plans that i`m aware of for either species to leave,i know they are looking at adding to the exhibit rather than remove anything from it.

Przewalski Horses

Are the Przewalski horses at Chester a breeding pair or females that are past breeding age?

Yeah, I've just checked, it is 1.3

The male had only just been brought in for breeding by the time of my 'keeper for the day' so I guess the zoo is trying to breed from the females...

I thought one was pregnant last summer but if she was the foal must not have survived. Better luck this year I hope, they've not bred any horses for 15 years.

Visited Chester on Saturday (12th April) the bridge is now open with only some minor alternative exits to be completed. Much improved viewing of the hidden paddocks that are behind the Indian Rhino shed. The new Cheetah enclosures are looking surprisingly well furnished.

A few other snips: -
1) Butterfly House path (was Maned Wolves) now closed with plans displayed on the barriers.
2) We now have no breeding pair of Great Indian Hornbills. What we do have dad, daughter and an 'unsuitable' further female. They are awaiting further guidance from the stud book holder.
3) Both young Giraffes are still alive. Margaret seemed well integrated. Cannot comment about the youngest as she was resting against the wall. Fingers crossed that all is well.
4) The Black Vulture is sitting on an egg but I am getting confused. I have seen her with, without and now with again all over the last couple of months. Suspect the keepers may be providing creative assistance. The Griffon Vulture seemed to be half heartedly considering nesting.
5) Messages earlier in this chain were speculating about potential pregnancies so can I add that the female Lowland Anoa was looking rather round.

I asked yet again when the next guide book will be produced. "Any month now" was the rather vague reply. Don't get excited as they have been saying that for over 18 months now. But at least the idea has not been scrapped.

Cheers, tall Paul from near Chester.

Zoospud, do you know which hornbill is in which aviary? (Elephant house, old ape enclosure in tropical realm and standard aviary in tropical realm)

Were there blackbuck or brow-antlered deer in any of the hidden paddocks? (Haven't seen them for months)

Regarding guide books, if they are producing one, I'd guess it would be in the summer so they can sell as many as possible and it can feature all the new developments.

The male is in the Elephant house, the daughter is in the main Tropical house aviary and the 'other' female is in the end aviary alongside the alligator/crocodile pool/building site. This 'other' female seemed rather unsettled by folks looking down on her from the walkway.

Unfortunately I did not see any deer in the hidden paddocks but there were droppings that were not from rhinos! Did see some brow-antlered deer only a few weeks ago on the grass paddock so I suspect all is well. I will keep checking.

For the record I live nearby with my wife. Most weekends we walk across the zoo by one route, I have a pint of Guinness in the Acorn, we eat, and then walk back by a different route. We have been doing this for 20 years. This new bridge is very good news for us. Much more variety of route!

Have chester brought in another female then? Because back in 2006 they had mother and son, the female was getting on a bit and they were considering phasing them out!

Regarding Przewalski horses, when I was there a couple of weeks ago one of the females appeared heavily pregnant so we should expect some news there this summer
