Have chester brought in another female then? Because back in 2006 they had mother and son, the female was getting on a bit and they were considering phasing them out!

She is still the same female, only around four weeks ago I was told that she was thought to be too old to breed. There are no plans to replace them with younger animals at the moment.

The female Anoa may indeed be round due to age. I remember when you could put your hand through the fence and scratch them. Their paddock was near the site that is now the picnic shed by the Jaguar house.

Not sure about the 'other' male GI Hornbill, we will try to find out more. We did also see a young bleeding heart dove in the Tropical house. Not significant, but a good sign that spring is final here. I am not a winter person!

Im still trying to figure out how i cant remember that old Anoa enclosure, im old enough to remember as it wasnt that long ago.

Would i be right in saying that they moved from the warty pig enclosure to the old one near the now jaguar enclosure to their current enclsoure. What was on the island before them??

Yes, that's right. That island was unused before the Anoa moved there. The Anoa paddock by what is now the Jaguar house also housed spare Arabian Gazelles for a while.

Also Collared Peccaries and Bagot goats. Soay Sheep were on the Anoa island, or the next one along in the 1970s.

My comments with regard to Chester's GI Hornbills have been clarified. Thanks. It is Brutus, the breeding male, who lost condition and unfortunately did not respond to treatment. Furthermore the 'unsuitable' female was not concerned by the people viewing her, quite the opposite, she is very keen on human company and wanted to say hi. I completely misread her actions. Shows why I work in IT rather than as a keeper!

Anyone going of to Chester on the weekend (zoogiraffe, bongorob ... others) and can find out more on current events with the black rhino breeding? Has Magadi been put in with the other female alone to breed? What about Quinto and Rosie .. how have the last years introductions gone? What is Sammy's standing in all this?

AKA eventually .. can we expect another rhino birth in 2009 or so? :D

rhino buff *****

Well folks visited today will try to clear a few things up the Anoa or not Mother and Son,but are the pair that have bred at least 3 young at the zoo,for the record these were sent to Galloway Wildlife Park,Blair Drummond Safari Park and West Midlands Safari Park, they think they have at least 2 Przewalskis Horse`s pregnant. As for the Black Rhinos the only thing i can tell you is Sammy is not in Tasavo(See Management change thread).Their are going to be changes in the Indain Rhino paddock to stop it looking like a mud bath.On monday 2.1 Cheetahs will be arriving at the zoo but these will be off show in the Cheetah/Onager House until the enclosures are finished, they are going to complete the back off show enclosure first so that they can run them in those first.

I like to try to keep you all informed when i know something sure i`ve forgotten something, ahhhh its just come to me saw the Blackbuck and Burmese Brow-anterlered Deer from the new bridge.

Just rembered in earlier thread it was mentioned about getting a female Giraffe from Blair Drummond this is still happening but when it does Samara will be heading in the opposite direction, also Margerat has been taken off-show for the time been due to problems.

What did I say a couple of months back about having two Indian rhinos in that size of paddock?;)

Are the Blackbuck and B.A. Deer still using it? They won't be able to find any grazing in it for much longer...:(
