The Tropical Realm pair of Tarictis are being moved to the aviary by the crocodiles, it is thought the upper level aviary is too small for them. The great Indian Hornbill currently kept there is going to the bird house, and eventually out of the zoo. All the lower floor aviaries are to be used exclusively for hornbills.

Its a great show of Hornbills walking down there now, it makes me (even thou not a great lover of birds) go and see them nearly every time I visit!

BOGOF turkish spiny mice!

Have you been to the zoo today Rob?

Does the zoo still keep the malay crestless firebacks?

What species will move into the old tarictic hornbills aviary? When I did my report on the tarictic hornbills, I did write that I thought that aviary was too small for them, and the zoo seem to agree with me:)

I don't know how anyone can not love hornbills they are beautiful birds, the zoo curators seem to think that!

Yes, I'd agree- extremely impressive too in the case of the big species. You are indeed fortunate that Chester is your local zoo- it must nowadays have by far(?) the largest Hornbill collection in the UK - I guess that's how you acquired your 'HornbillMania'....

Be glad you didn't grow up near some other zoo with not a Hornbill in sight- even a huge collection like London has only a very few.

I also like the 'ugly' Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, which has great charm, though Great Indian remains my real favourite.

Hornbill I went to Chester today.

Malyan Crestless Fireback Pheasants have bred a chick this year. Also 2 Vietnamese Pheasants and 2 Palawan Peacock Pheasants have hatched. A new pair of Palawans has arrived, that may solve the mystery of the birds in the elephant House, though I haven't seen any pheasants there yet. The turtles have gone from this building.

I don't know what will replace the Tarictics in Tropical Realm, nor why the Great indian Hornbills are seperated. I think they might be related.

Scarlet Ibises are getting a new aviary, I don't know where this will be.

A black stork was hatched and lived for 10 days, an improvement on last year.

Southern Bald Ibis may not now be coming, they are similar to the Ibises already at the zoo.

The black vultures eggs were infertile again.

The aquarium has reared Archer Fish to 10 days, the best they've ever done, and some are still alive. Strangely for a brackish water fish all the babies kept in brackish water died, most of those kept in salt water also died, but the ones kept in freshwater are thriving. The problem is finding food small enough for them to eat.

The Asian Arowana eggs were infertile.

The Snake-necked Turtles laid eggs in the water, hopefully next time they will do so on land.

Margaret is back on the giraffe paddock and is doing well. She was isolated after she caught a virus, sadly the same virus caused the death of the other calf, she was too young to overcome it.

Strolch had to be put down after his eye infection became untreatable.

Glad to see Margaret is back on display again. Sad news about strolch, hopefully the new male and the existing female will be more succesful and produce some cubs.
