Moscow zoo Moscow zoo

Interesting…
I recall once I was talking about hyaenas with a family member of mine, and she recalls that once in the Moscow Zoo during her childhood she saw a hyaena herself. From then on she always wondered why hyaenas were so despised in popular thought, given that the one she saw was quite a beauty.
I then inquire more about this animal - she recalled it had no spots, but had a mane. I then figure that the animal she must be talking about is the brown hyaena. I then show her a picture in a book, and she concurs with my conclusion.
But then some time later there is something interesting. With this family member I am at Wildkatzenzentrum Felidae, and the guide takes us to the brown hyaenas. One is rather lazy, so he tosses some chicks to make it more responsive and active. I then tell her that this must’ve been what she saw at Moscow all those years ago!
But then she has a moment of doubt - for the mane she remembered of her hyaena was larger than what she was seeing here. So it was probably that it was the brown hyaena after all… simply that its mane was of different magnitude.
So quite possibly not the first time the species has come to the zoo !

ZTL claims that Moscow held Brown Hyenas from 1864 until an unknown date, but I doubt they lasted long enough to be the individuals that your friend is referring to (of course this might not be entirely accurate). Striped Hyenas, which Moscow have held more recently, also have manes of sorts, but probably not larger.

Her recollection was from the 70s or so.
She does not recall the animal having stripes..

The brown hyenas most likely come from the Zoologico Nacional de Cuba, which gave us the brown hyenas present in Mexican zoos. It seems that the hyenas in Cuba from the Namibia import continue to breed. I wonder what the Havana Zoo would recieve in return.

Hi, please do you know anything about belugas? They insisted they want to keep them, but obviously they are still not living in the new pavilion.

How many brown hyena are in Cuba?

That all depends on whether they ARE getting Shoebill - certainly I can't think of anywhere which a) currently keeps the species and b) is likely to send stock to a Russian collection.

So it's either untrue, or liable to be wild-caught I suspect.
The Zootierliste shows that Muscow Zoo currently holds Shoebill

Zoológico Nacional de Cuba recieved 3 pairs of brown hyenas from Namibia. At least one pair went to Mexico. It is hard to know how many hyenas have bred in Cuba because it so hard to get recent information on that nation. But Zoologico Nacional de Cuba has an excellent breeding success with the animals from Namibia except for the elephants which did not do well.

Thanks Carlos. Do you know how many elephants they imported from Namibia, and how many are left now?

Moscow Zoo’s collection is excellent. Is it safe to visit though? If I ever make it to Europe I’d love to go.
Probably not advisable, but it is currently "safe" to visit. Few Western tourists are visiting the country for obvious reasons - the bulk of their tourists are now from China and other Eastern countries. Apparently Russian visas are actually much easier to get now than they used to be, and they even have an eVisa. There aren't any flights in or out of Russia from/to Western countries though, so you'd have to go from Asia or the Middle East, not from Europe.
