Most awesome aimal encounter in the wild

Thought this might be an interesting one, even if not strictly about zoos.

My family went on holiday to a game reserve in south africa (cant remember what it was called) that didnt have the big five so the chalets were not fenced. My dad was out on the porch having a smoke so went to chat with him over animals had seen that day. Then heard a VERY odd noise so looked down. Less than 2 meters from us was an aardwolf wandering around looking for food, completely ignored us but I think its fair to say we were shocked. Was a beatiful healthy adult and unless you a zookeeper I doubt you can get that close a veiw ever.

Well it's not my encounter but I am certain it was Heather Green's most awesome encounter:

My encounter wasn't exactly awesome, more like me jumping out of skin:

no offence grafxman but your posts are incredibly annoying. Do you need to have Flickr links in almost every single one? I know its not your fault the way this site displays the links as massive black boxes, but could you try to maybe not do it all the time? Or maybe put the relevant photos in the Zoochat gallery and link to them there?

All the photos I have linked to are directly pertinent to the subject of discussion however since some folks find them offensive, I won't be posting any more links to my Flickr images. I don't upload my photos to any other sites. Since I have perhaps 4,000 plus zoo photos it just isn't practical. I have been told it is permissible to provide a simple hyperlink to my Flickr photostream.

its not the photos themselves that I was referring to, just the way that this site shows them as just big black boxes which I find annoying. As I said I don't mean to offend you personally, just an observation.

I don't see the difficulty in just attaching the photos as thumbnails to the post, which would be the easiest way of doing it.

I too find those black boxes very annoying. As I recently mentioned to an administrator, other forums don't do that. Most forums just show a simple hyperlink and some will even display the actual Flickr photo. I think the thumbnails require the actual photo to be uploaded to zoochat and I won't be doing that. If there's a way to do a thumbnail with a link to the Flickr image then maybe an administrator would approve that.

Apologies to Weasle for hijacking his thread.

if the photos are on your computer, just go to the "Go Advanced" tab below, select upload files from your computer [I can't remember what it says exactly] and you're away. No need to put them in the gallery first.

My most amazing encounter would be seeing a mother grizzly and her cubs feeding on the carcass of a bison in Yellowstone. I caught it all on video by the way.

My most amazing encounter were white-faced Capuchin monkeys in Costa Rica. The first one was just a few feet up a tree who threw sticks at me. The other was one that was at eye level and practically posed for the camera.

I was fortunate to work in Nepal in 2009. On a visit to Bardia natiional park, a pangolin leapt onto the 4wd track and ran ahead of the car until retreating into the tallest grass I have ever seen. No wonder you can't see tigers.

I don't really have anything interesting to tell compared to most of you other, as I've never been further away from my home than Portugal, and I mostly visit cities where you cannot really have the big experiences with animals in the wild.

My favorite, however, would have to be when I saw flamingos in Algarve. Throughout all of my childhood, I rarely traversed further away than cold Scandinavian and Central European countries, and the flamingo was one of epitomes of an exotic bird. So realizing I was looking at this "exotic" bird in the wild was a bit breathtaking.

Not what most people would call amazing or even, I suppose, an encounter (even ones who were there) but it stayed with me - an area of magneitic termite mounds in Australia, I found them really spooky and other-worldly, like row on row of tombstones and a real stillness in the air. It's pretty amazing that these small creatures create something so impressive!

I'll post full details when there's a gallery to put the photos in, but in terms of things I've seen from a small wooden boat, these Delacour's Langurs in the absurdly beautiful Van Long wetlands in Vietnam are unbeatable. One of my all-time favourite wildlife locations - there were also lots of pond herons, kingfishers, crakes and an astounding egret roost.

Fabulous place and such attractive (and rare - only 200 or so individuals remain) monkeys.

That's incredible. I'm sure you've got everyone very jealous - can't wait to see the rest of your photos!
