Mountain lions spotted in Los Angeles and pond turtle recovery in San Diego

So these people move into the foothills of the mountains, right on the edge of wilderness areas, and then are shocked when they see wild animals? If you want nice views but no wildlife, buy a high-rise condo in downtown L.A.

The last thing I want is to wake up to see a cougar next to me in bed. :D

What? A FREE animal encounter that Nanoboy does not want to participate in?

:p

@Arizona Docent, I was wondering do these encounters now appear because houses started to push further and further into cougar habitat or is the cougar moving back into areas which is was pushed out before?

People have been encroaching deeper into mountain lion habitat. There has been a boom in construction into previously uninhabited, or lightly inhabited, parts of the hills of California. These kind of conflicts are popping up in several parts of California. In 1990 mountain lion hunting was banned in California (except for animals that threaten humans or livestock) and the cats are doing really well. The problem is that expanded human settlement keeps running into their habitat. In some places this is getting better with more enlightened zoning laws, but there is a long way to go to make the problem better overall.

I imagine that with all that encroachment, pets are encouraging the lions closer to homes.

It is a possibility, but the lions tend to mainly want deer and other wild animals. Coyotes are certainly attracted by pets. Many unfortunate pet owners in the hills around LA have learned that the hard way.
