Mountain Tapirs

@Pygathrix: Shoo, don't be so sensitive; that was just a little playful & friendly nudge, as indicated by the ";)". I edited it because I realized that it was not you who had brought up that expression-and because it sounded better...And what-you have never been to a tapir bar? The fruit cocktails and the jacuzzis there are awesome (although the latter tend to get rather dirty after a while) ! ;)

The literal translation:
...this species is critically endangered in Colombia and the only male tapir is living in captivity.

Maybe they are referring to a male in captivity in Colombia...?

I thought there were already plans for that animal at the Cali Zoo...

Future plans include the expansion of the captive breeding program by pairing a mountain tapir from the North American captive population with a wild-born individual at the Cali Zoo. The successful reproduction of this pair would result in increased genetic diversity for the captive population. It is hoped that offspring would eventually be exchanged with individuals from the North American captive population, as well as be used to set up pairs at other zoological institutions in Colombia, Ecuador, or Peru. The educational value of establishing mountain tapirs at zoological institutions in their countries of origin could have a tremendous impact on conservation efforts for this species.

Don't panic, I know you were joking:):);) Tapir jacuzzi sounds disgusting. Not as bad as going out to a restaurant with a rabbit though, you should see what they snack on between the main course and dessert.

That explains it, I thought it was probably just a mistranslation from the Spanish. It's a pity the only one in captivity in Colombia isn't a female given the excess of males in captivity. Also you might think any spare females turning up from the wild would go to Cali rather than Cologne, but the latter appear to have some hopes in that direction.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

"European" mountain tapirs were also kept in Leipzig, Frankfurt and Paris... Non of the pairs ever bred :(

Any progress achieved on the mountain tapir front at LA Zoo or other US/SSP zoos (as the species is slowly disappearing from the region).
It would be a great asset to have local zoos involved in mountain pair conservation and awareness?

The Cali and other zoos are doing great with S. leucopus BTW.

Hi all,

I want you to do me a favour... If anyone of you has photos of the "european" mountain tapirs in Frankfurt, Leipzig, Stuttgart or Paris, I would like to see them...

Is it possible to post them, or send them to me ???

Regards

Tim

I have some shots of the Frankfurt pair from 1973. I will see what I can do, but I will need to dig out the slides and get my slide scanner working, so don't hold your breath.
