Look Who's Back - 8/10
German-language movie that's part political commentary, part comedy, part reality TV about Hitler being transported from 1945 to modern-day Germany. It was most fascinating to see how many modern-day Germans embraced him and his views, while other wanted to skewer him. I understand that it is based on a best-selling book. Watch it on Netflix for free!
Hush - 7/10
A good old fashioned slasher movie. A hearing-impaired writer is tormented by a slasher in a mask. Worth a look if you like the genre.
Chocolat - 8/10
I had never seen this film from a decade ago, but stumbled upon it on one of the streaming services. If you enjoyed The Hundred Foot Journey movie, then you will enjoy this film about a single mother opening a chocolaterie in a very conservative town.
Focus - 8/10
This was a very enjoyable heist/scam artist movie with Will Smith and Margot Robbie in the lead roles. A bit corny and predictable in parts, but overall there were enough twists and turns to make it worth watching. If you're a fan of Ocean's 11,12,13, then you will want to watch this.
The Voices - 6/10
What a weird movie with Ryan Reynolds. He obviously has mental problems, and when he stops taking his meds, his pet dog and cat talk to him. The cat encourages him to kill his coworkers, and he does. A black dramedy if I ever saw one.
The Giver - 5/10
Another one of these post apocalyptic, utopia, teen movies. It had potential, but really wasn't my cup of tea - I wasn't sure where it was going, and at the end of the film, I wanted my 1.5hrs back.
We're the Millers - 7/10
A no brainer comedy about a group of 'neighbours' that pretend to be a family so that they can collect a fat paycheck for smuggling drugs across the Mexican-American border. Things go awry, comedy ensues. Worth a watch if you liked The Hangover.
The Good Dinosaur - 6/10
This was a coming of age animated flick with the best animated water (rivers) and trees I have ever seen. Oh, the story is a downer: a young dinosaur's dad get's killed, he gets lost, and he needs to find his way back home and overcome his fears. Marketed as a kids film, but if you swap the dinosaurs for humans, then you get an adult, film that would fit in quite well on the 'Life' TV channel.
2 Guns - 6/10
A dysfunctional buddy cop movie with a few twists and turns, some comedy, and a few big explosions. Nothing to write home about, but worth a look if you are a Denzil Washington or Mark Wahlberg and it's on TV.
