Total Recall

Who from the action-era doesn't remember Arnold Schwarzenegger in Verhoeven's cold violence-fest "Total Recall"?! I went into the modern remake a bit unsure what I was about to experience, but I will openly go against (seemingly) the majority of the critics and say that I really enjoyed it.

It was a bit weird watching this movie because it is literally almost a straight copy script-wise, even including lots of the same lines (although there was a nice "two weeks" bit in the Customs scene). Even the freakin' characters names are the same -- including Quaid's why-even-bother-including-him-in-the-remake work buddy Harry (I kept hearing Colin Farrell saying "Harry" in Schwarzenegger's accent!). I was sitting there knowing exactly what was going to happen and who all the characters were and where their allegiances lay, which was a bit frustrating.

There are some differences of course. Earth and Mars are now played by, er, Great Britain and Australia....um, moving on.....and there is a distinct "Blade Runner" fusion going on in this future. The writers presumably couldn't decide if they wanted to keep Michael Ironside or Sharon Stone, so they just gave Kate Beckinsale both roles. Because there's no Mars the ending has been changed but that's alright, we didn't want to watch Colin Farrell's face distorting in the Martian atmosphere anyway.

My verdict: A for Awesome Action; A for Awesome Special Effects; and A for Jessica Biel's.....Acting.

Oh, and the three-breasted hooker is waaay hotter in this version than the original, and that alone makes it worth seeing!

I just saw this movie and really enjoyed it. I wanted a different ending though. Maybe where he woke up to find out it was a memory and then something happened to make him and viewers doubt if it really was a dream - kind of like the ending of Inception. But, great action sequences anyway.

I can't actually remember the ending to be honest. I probably thought it should be different too. The movie was widely panned by critics, but I liked it.

I never bother with what the critics say. After all, they are the ones who say that the Oscar-winning movies are fantastic, but they are, for the most part, crap dramas in my opinion. The MTV Movie Awards are more my kind of thing. :D

Why would you feel weird? Like you said, it's a great film. Makes a change from all the Hollywood blockbuster rubbish

It's definitely excellent but normally films like this make you feel nice but are easily forgettable and nothing to rave about (i.e. The Bucket List, The Most Exotic Marigold Hotel). The Intouchables is far superior and will hopefully be regarded as a classic in years to come. The type of movie to show your grandkids in 60 years.

Sounds like I will feel to smash the cinema screen and ask for a refund if you are comparing it to The Bucket List though. :D
I will steer clear.

Skyfall

I saw Skyfall the other day, and I thought it was really good. It had all the neccessary ingredients: great opening chase scene, some international stuff, but then finished off with some excellent scenes in London and further north.

There were some negatives: the booby-trapping wasn't very Bond-y, and one scene reminded me a lot of Coronation Street's 50 Years episode's tram crash (only not as good). Also, we spent significant amounts of time watching events which were largely irrelevant to the film and should have been edited down (the stuff set in China).

I've really only watched the more recent James Bond movies, and I would say this is better than Quantum and the Pierce Brosnan ones, and on par with Casino Royale. It is significantly different from these movies however, and does tell a rather atypical Bond story.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2

This is the other movie that I know all you guys (Chlidonias, Nanoboy, Hix, etc.) have seen, but nobody has reviewed it yet.

As you all know, this fifth and final installment in the Twilight series centres on the newly-turned vampire Bella and her new-husband Edward, as well as their half-human, half-vampire daughter, who the vampire police (Volturi) want to eliminate. So Bella & Edward's clan (the Cullens) have to gather a small army of other vampires, to convince the Volturi that the daughter isn't bad, and shouldn't be killed. This is the slow half, which dragged a bit, but did a good job of setting the scene for the second half.

And the second half is actually pretty impressive. It revolves around the arrival of the Volturi, the tension-filled negotiations and the final battle scene. Followed by long credits in which every actor who has ever appeared in any of the five Twilight movies (including both actresses who played Victoria, despite the first being fired) is shown in a beautiful montage. Awwww.

Interestingly, this movie deviates quite significantly from the book (at least it appears to), in that there was never a battle in the book. Despite this, this is the movie's actual genius - most viewers know exactly what is going to happen, and when the first unexpected thing happens (vampire X being killed) the audience totally freaks out.

Overall, if you never liked any of the movies (regardless of whether you have actually ever seen any or not), this is unlikely to change your opinion. If you have watched the others and not been particularly impressed, you'll probably be impressed. If you like/love twilight you will have already watched it. Go into it with an open-mind and you will find something worth watching.

The second-best movie of the series, beaten only by the first installment.

Rating: 7/10

I have only seen from Goldeneye onwards at the movies, and I have every intention of seeing Skyfall soon. All your reviews seem more or less positive, but let's be fair: as men, we dream of being James Bond and think the movies are awesome, despite the plot being thinner than a Vietnamese rice paper roll.

I have seen only one Twilight movie at the cinema, but I saw the others at home. They are targeting teens, but I am a fan of vampire lore, so I watch Twilight out of loyalty to the genre. I will definitely watch the new Twilight movie - but at home.

Has anyone here ever seen the horrible movie version of Anne Rice's awesome books about the vampire 'Lestat'? I will tell you folks more about that in another post.

I saw the first Twilight movie thrice in the cinema. I thoroughly enjoy vampire TV shows and movies, I'm not sure why.

I have seen, and if I remember correctly largely enjoyed, Interview with the Vampire, but I haven't seen the apparently atrocious "sequel" Queen of the Damned. Wikipedia mentions another sequel, The Tale of the Body Thief, as being in development as of Feb 2012. I haven't read any of Anne Rice's books (will do eventually I expect), although I have read a couple of her son's books (Christopher Rice).

You guys have never seen the 1960s Bond movies? I think that you would like them. They age very well and it is fun to see the Bond movies from when the Cold War was at full tilt. I would recommend watching them in order as it is fun to see Connery grow into the role.

Queen of the Damned was atrocious, but, they filmed it in Victoria. They used placed in Melbourne, a disused quarry in Geelong for a rock concert, and Montsalvat as his residence (which I visited a couple weeks ago and took a pic in exactly the same spot that Lestat stood).

I never read her son's books (I wasn't even aware she had a son and that he wrote!), but I have read all of the Vampire Chronicles. I highly recommend reading at least the first novel to see if it's your thing.

David, I saw from Goldeneye in the cinema, but I saw a few of the others on TV. I find them to be quite cheesy, so I am not a big fan of the lame special effects. (I know that you are, given your love for 'Terra Nova'. :P) Just last night I watched the Top Gear 50th Bond anniversary where they celebrated the Bond cars. I laughed a fair bit at some of the older Bond clips. :D

South Pacific (the musical)

There isn't a thread for musicals, so I thought that I would make a brief mention here.

We caught the last Melbourne production of 'South Pacific' on Sunday - it will be Sydney's turn soon.

If you don't like musicals or have never been to one before, then you will not enjoy this. This musical was first produced in the 1940s, before being made into a movie in the 1950s. It's a love story set in the South Pacific (where else?) during WWII. There are a few catchy songs, but the screenplay was still the original, so there weren't any modern, topical jokes. The woman sitting next to us was in her 80s and she thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is not a musical that will convert the 'musical haters' out there, and indeed, it is not a musical that I will recommend for fans of musicals.

Rating: 6/10 (where 'Wicked' and 'Rock of Ages' were both nines)

Dude, you really like Twilight? I just lost all respect for you and may have to delete this thread.

Sigh...:(

The Roger Moore era Bonds ARE cheesy. The Connery and George Lazenby Bonds are awesome, especially "From Russia With Love", "Goldfinger", and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" . The Aston-Martin from "Goldfinger" was so cool that it [SPOILER ALERT] made a return appearance in "Skyfall" where it continued to be awesome.

Top Gear, I understand, is the most watched and most downloaded TV show in the entire world - but it is not shown in America. :D Is that true? Do you have any idea what Top Gear is? Here is the advert:

I didn't know where else to put this: Arnold Schwarzenegger is apparently making a new Conan movie, The Legend Of Conan!!!!
The Legend of Conan Trailer, News, Videos, and Reviews | ComingSoon.net

Given how old and unactionstarable he looked in The Expendables 2 I am not looking forward to having to watch this :(
Arnie signs on for Terminator 5 and 6 - NZ Entertainment - Your daily fix of movie news and film trailers
Action hero turned politician turned older action hero, Arnold Schwarzenegger has reportedly signed on to film Terminator 5 and 6. As we rapidly approach the years of the robot uprising made famous in James Cameron's 1991 hit, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, will the star be too old to play the T-800 cyborg?

Annapurna Pictures, the studio behind critically acclaimed hits Lawless, Killing Them Softly and The Master has picked up the rights to the cult sci-fi franchise. Given that pedigree of filmmaking quality, it looks like Terminator is in safe hands.

It's been a decade since he last donned the leather jacket and shades, but at 65, Arnie isn't letting age slow him down. The ex-Governor of California has six movies planned for 2013.

Terminator isn't the only franchise Arnie intends to revisit. "I must first shoot Ten with David Ayer, but then we’re going to focus on Conan," he revealed. As long as it's better than the 2012 Conan, we'll be happy.

He's also planning a sequel to Twins with Danny DeVito.

Arnie is cool! I look forward to some new terminators. I wonder if it will be set in present day like T3 or the future like T4? And where did the silly tv series "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" fit in?

I liked the tv series. The ending sucked though and just created a massive continuity error (well, actually I guess the entire series was a bit of a continuity error but that was mainly due to having to pretend that T3 didn't exist).
