Mr Gharial's species research

Alright, we have three more regions left before we finish Phase 1, two of which being quite large.

So to celebrate page three, I thought I might do a little mini-"region": distribution uncertain.

These are:
Brown rat
Black rat
European house mouse

These three species occur nearly worldwide because they spread through human settlements. It is uncertain where exactly these animals occurred originally.

The Brown rat is assumed to have originated in Northern China and Mongolia
The Black rat is assumed to have originated in South-East Asia
The European house mouse is assumed to originate in large parts of Eurasia

I still have to do some reorganising for the next region, but it should hopefully still be out this week.

Species list South-East Asia:
Six regions:
South East Asia regions.png

The borders between the Eastern Himalayas, the Regular Himalayas, Central/Southern China and Mainland SEA are a bit superficial. The Eastern Himalayas is more of a region you could use as an in-between area for any of the surrounding areas, and you could use most of the animals here for any of the other regions. As I said before, take it with a pinch of salt and check the distribution maps...

Once again, there will be a region-wide list. It will not include the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau, due to a lot of animals occurring in all other five regions, but not the Himalayas. Some species, like the Society finch and Radiated ratsnake, are included in the region-wide list, and in the Himalayan list separately.

I am slowly getting close to finishing up the fish. It's a long and painful progress but oh well. I've already asked a few questions on the Spec zoo design questions thread, but now I've come across my first species that I truly can't categorize

Pomatoschistus microps, the Common goby. English Wikipedia says it occurs in Brackish and Fresh water, in Dutch its called the Brackish water goby and is said to occur in the ocean. German wikipedia says it occurs in all three. But nowhere can I find how tolerant they are in a captive setting.

So I turn to this thread; where do I categorize the Common goby? Fresh water, Salt water, or both?

So I turn to this thread; where do I categorize the Common goby? Fresh water, Salt water, or both?

From looking at Waarnemingen.nl and iNaturalist this species seems to be most common in coastal marine waters and brackish estuarine waters, and far less so in pure freshwater further inland.

But given that they seem to be common in the estuarine sections of rivers, I would include them in both lists, perhaps with an annotation about brackish river sections in the fresh water list.

I've saved the worst for last with the Cichlids, which is by far the biggest group there is. But it does mean I can get started with the Marine species list. I'm starting with the Atlantic, and I'll do the Indopacific later. Unlike the land creatures, I'm going to do these one region at a time, purely because there are that many fish species.

Atlantic ocean:

Devided into 9 regions:
1: North sea and the Bay of Biscay
2: Mediterranean and the upper Afro-Atlantic
3: Lower African Basins
4: Upper American Atlantic
5: Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and the North Brazil current
6: Brazil and Malvinas currents
7: Baltic sea
8: Black sea
9: Arctic ocean

Because the last three regions have a lot less fish in comparison to the others, I'm combining them into one post. It also won't include which family the fish belong to (except for the Perchlikes).

Species list Baltic sea*:

* the Baltic sea is partially Brackish, and there are quite a few freshwater fish that also occur in the sea, like European perch and Northern pike. Sadly, the IUCN website doesn't like showcasing both the Freshwater and Saltwater distribution for a lot of species (sometimes it only showcases the freshwater range of a marine species, which is particularly annoying...). So I couldn't properly look into all the species that occur here. The Freshwater list includes a "Baltic sea drainage" list, so if you do plan to make a Baltic sea exhibit, check both lists...

Our next few regions make up the Pacific Ocean. Because there aren't that many animals, I'm including all three American areas in one post. To the surprise of nobody, the Asian Pacific oceans include a ridiculous amount of species, so these will all be separate.
