Tierpark Hellabrunn: Newsanzeige

I guess you mean MOOSE, because ELK is a Cervus species, also known as WAPITI and Tierpark Hellabrunn Munich doesn't have Wapitis.
European elk is the European moose. American elk is wapiti.

Alces are the original elk (hence Alces) - the American Cervus elk was named after the European Alces elk.

Okay, beg your pardon. But to avoid misunderstandings by our US-American and Canadian members (whom I've never heard using the word elk neither for an American nor an European moose) wouldn't it make more sens to use elk for wapiti only?

for me personally, I never use elk (or at least not usually - I probably shouldn't say "never"). I much prefer to use moose for Alces and wapiti or red deer for the appropriate Cervus. It just avoids all the confusion.

Seems the genus Alces is somewhat strange in different languages :
in Dutch they are called Eland - in other languages a complete other animal !
in German they are called Elch which can be confusing with the English Elk for both Wapiti and European elk.
So I guess using Moose for both species would be the most wise dissision ;).

As noted: elk is used for European species and moose more so for the N.American species.

The house has now been opened.
