Highland Wildlife Park Musk oxen at HWP

Musk oxen still in quarantine in the Netherlands it is unknown when they will arrive as blue tongue restrictions still in place.
But great news instead of 2 animals coming there will be 3 as the female has given birth in quarantine.

Brilliant news breeding Musk oxen bodes well for when they arrive that you could end up with a decent sized herd.

It is looking "unlikely", that the musk oxen will be in the park this year, their enclosure is still being constructed, having been put back to the extreme winter at the park.
They are desperate to get the animals over, as it is costing them a small fortune having them quarantined in Holland.

Does the enclosure require major structural work? It sounds like something more complex than a fenced-in field.

The person i spoke to at the park mentioned that "strong fencing" is required, so no deer fencing with electric barriers here.

I remember reading in an old Whipsnade guide that they kept having to repair the fencing on the Musk Ox paddock, due to the defensive nature of the male during breeding.
That's probably the need for 'stronger' fencing!
Pity they won't be there this year though :(
I had hoped they had arrived when I saw the new postings!

This is quite true, the paddock they lived in had a heavy black iron railing around the exhibit with what I can remember a extender bar about two or three feet inwards from this fence, I have an old guide book which states the fence having to be repaired each year :D. I think I also have an old London zoo book which shows a pic or two of that fencing

One of the main reasons I use to go to Whipsnade zoo was to see the Musk Ox and of course the Indian rhinos as they were the only UK zoo to exhibit them for many years.

The wait is finally over, they arrived on Saturday and should be off-show for about a week.

Do I remember correctly that one of the females gave birth whilst in quarantine and if so, does anyone know what happened to the calf?

I think it is the same mother and calf that have arrived at the park.

AT LAST!!
It's only taken 4 years!
Is there any other animal arrival that has taken so long, or longer???

Can't wait to see them.

Let's hope we don't have to wait another 4 years for a male;)

The male's hopefully going to arrive at the end of this year.
