Must See Rare Species in California Zoos

The blue-eyed lemurs are no longer on exhibit at the LA Zoo, unless something has changed since my last visit to the zoo last month (entirely possible).

Hopefully that's only temporary. I believe the LA Zoo is the only one on this side of the country that houses them.

You're welcome. I don't think I ever took the Animal Spotlight Tour. I did the Penguin Encounter one once and that was really neat because we actually got to touch a Penguin and go into the indoor exhibit. I've done Behind the Scenes so many times I can't remember. Every single tour had Animal Care as part of the tour, which was neat because you got to see the rehabbing marine life and if there's a trainer back there they often bring one of the dolphins up so you can touch it. The Shark lab was pretty neat, too. One time I was the only one on the tour so we just kind of walked around and talked about the history of San Diego, Mission Bay and Sea World. I actually knew a couple of things about Sea World that the tour guide didn't, which was kind of fun. I don't think I ever went on the same tour twice. I mean, the BTS tour. I never had the same "route" twice.
That's interesting. I don't necessarily need an interaction with the dolphins, (but it would be awesome) I just want to see them. They are so rare and pretty.

The San Francisco also has Double Wattled Cassowary, Blue-eyed Black Lemurs, Red Bellied Lemurs, Red Pandas, Komodo Dragon and is an excellent place to view Snow Leopards

Thanks! Hadn't heard much about this place, so any information is certainly welcome.

I've found a few more species in San Diego. Do the zoo or safari park keep any of these species (old unknowns will be posted also)
Blyth's tragopan
Dalmatian pelican
Pink backed pelican
Great white pelican
White bellied imperial pigeon
Grey imperial pigeon
Ornate fruit dove
Red bellied malcoha
Royal antelope
Caspian pelican
Philippine hanging parrot
Southern bald ibis
Sitatunga

Thanks to everyone who has helped in this thread so far. If you know whether the zoo or the safari park has these, and where (like which aviary or individual exhibit) it would be greatly appreciated!

Here is what I remember from my October 2014 visit:
Great White Pelicans were on exhibit in the zoo. The flock lived in the lake below the Raptor aviaries. There were some other birds there as well, notably the Anhinga.
Pink-backed Pelicans were in Safari Park - on a lake in Nairobi Village area.
I saw Dalmatian Pelicans in Safari Park also, as we were driving towards the field exhibits, but am not sure if they were on show (we had a private tour)

We were specifically looking for Blyth's Tragopan - in fact spent two days asking about it, and were eventually told that it moved off exhibit. Not sure if they even have this species anymore.

I saw Sitatungas in the field exhibit in Safari Park. Royal Antelopes were off exhibit.

I saw Malcoha both at the zoo (I believe in one of the Wings of Australasia aviaries, but don't remember for sure) and SeaWorld.

Southern Bald Ibis were at Safari Park in the walk-through aviary close to the entrance

I have to check my photos on the pigeons and hanging parrots - don't recall off top of my head

If you want to see Blue-Eyed Black Lemurs, just go to Waco (the closest major zoo to Fort Hood).

I don't have any photos of Philippine hanging parrots, but there were definitely Blue-crowned Hanging parrots at the zoo, I think in one of the aviaries in the Tiger River area.

I haven't been there since I learned they had them, but never saw them in the few times that I was there before.

Thanks! Very impressive lemur collection. If only more places would take a hint about the greatness of Madagascar.

I have just realized that niuafo'ou scrubfowl is the same thing as Tongan Megapode. My apologies for any confusion :)

Sitatunga were kept in an exhibit (or two) in the African Woods/Outpost section of the Safari park, and very visible.

I don't know what a Caspian Pelican is, I guess just another name for Dalmation Pelican? If so, I think these are on display at the Safari Park.

At the San Diego Zoo
Blyth's tragopan---friendly male on exhibit on road left of Arctic Trader store
Peligans---not on exhibit lower flamingo aviary is being netted due to avian flu concerns
Imperial pigeons---Owens Aviary not sure if they are the ones you are looking for.
Ornate fruit dove---off exhibit in hummingbird area. If there is a bird keeper near by they might show it to you if you ask.
Royal antelope---off exhibit
Southern bald ibis---Scripps aviary
Mount Goliath lorikeet--Australasia aviaries
purple-naped lory--not on exhibit
Tongan megapode---road left of Arctic Trader store

It is. Second time I've made that mistake so far, sorry again :/

The day is finally here! I board the plane in 30-40 minutes. Will arrive in L.A., hopefully beat Aquarium of the Pacific by 1 :).
