Blackpool Zoo My Blackpool Zoo updates#1

Njema is to stay on contraceptive for the time being she has been said to have been learning from her half-sister Miliki with her infant.

I'd be very suprised if Kena got pregnant this year, as she is Bukavu's least favourite female and that he prefers Njema but as Kena has bred before they chose her instead of Njema.

Well you have finally solved the riddle of why the other two females haven't bred. Its not surprising really if they have both been on contraceptives...

My guess is Kena is likely to get pregnant quite quickly (after the contraceptives wear off) as she's an experienced breeder. I'm surprised about the reason given for Njema-I wouldn't have thought that necessary as she grew up in the social group at Apenheul along with Miliki and so is bound to have good memory of infant raising from then (as did Miliki) so I'm a bit surprised they have given that reason. Also they seem to be limiting the number of breeders there.

I would predict Kena won't rear a baby herself though.

The reason their not breeding all of the females as;

A. Miliki has only just had a baby(well last year!)

B. They don't have enough space indoors(outdoors alot of the space is fine)

C. Kena is a proven breeder yes, but not a very good mother as I've been told.

Don't shoot the messanger boy it's only what I got told of Louise a friend of mine who is a one of the keepers!:D

That's okay- I'm not criticising their decisions, but its nice to know how and why these decisions are arrived at sometimes- the space issue inside in this instance goes some way to explaining the current arrangement.. I read your p.m. too so understand the situation better now.

Kena is a proven breeder yes, but not a very good mother as I've been told.

Kena bred several times at Barcelona(she has offspring at Bristol and Paignton) but all the young have had to be handreared. Because she's now 'middle-aged' at the age of 30 I would not expect her behaviour to change much either- even after living with an example of good motherhood like Miliki.

Another brilliant day at the Zoo today here's the news;

I was very privileged to be able to go in with the Tapirs and Aardvarks feeding them Carrots and Mealworms respectively.

A pair of Leopard Tortoises were mating.

The youngest baby Camels have been named Kate and Will.

Greater Rhea have at least now 20 eggs which you won't believe but I have evidence!:D

Tebogo the young Zebra was introduced to Bette with his mother Helene things went very smootly, his father Fernando was kept seperate.

Pertinax the news you wanted!

Ramon is to stay at the Zoo no plans to bring a new male in at present-the Zoo don't want Victoria to breed again.

I understand either PL/Howletts swapped male De Brazza's a few months back which produced the young baby.

Thanks Jordan.

So they still hope Ramon will breed with the younger females then?

De Brazza's- swapping males was a simple but logical move-so the mother of the recent baby must therefore be one of the females born at Blackpool. With a new unrelated male they have a good group again,- do you know how many females(sisters) are currently at Blackpool ?

There's 3 or 4 females I know some of them are related but not sure if all of them are.

De Brazzas- I think you'll find all(?) the current females are sisters, born to the original pair. The last one was handraised after the mother suddenly died and then partially looked after by the others I believe. So it would have been their father who was recently exchanged for an unrelated male. Good move.

Hi, we will be visiting Blackpool Zoo for the first time this week, any tips for the best things to see? we are regulars to Chester so hope we can get round in one day, thanks :D

Hi, if you go in the morning you,ll see Tebogo the Hartmann,s zebra foal in the large paddock with his mum, there are sealion shows in the day as well. In the childrens farm you,ll see goats, small sheep minature shetland ponies, as well as minature donkey,s and the new addition Leah the foal. Where the old children farm used to be there is a new large aiviary, do take a long lens. Both the pileated gibbon baby and the gorilla baby are a year old now and they are a delight to watch. Both are females. There are 3 baby bactarian camels. 2 boys and a girl. There,s so much to see. The otter family 2 adults and 3 girls, now a year old. They have parrot shows as well.
