Chester Zoo My Chester Zoo Visits

Ahhh good, glad the Red Panda is doing fine :). As for the births, they have announced the eggs hatching for Crowned Pigeon and encouraged us to watch the flamingo chick hatching via webcam. Is this different for birds, maybe the incubation time counts in the 30 days?

If a bird lives for 30 days from hatching it is counted as a breeding, if it dies during that time it is counted as did not survive.

Ahh right. Maybe they just made an exception to the '30 days before any announcement' rule with the flamingo chick. Can't wait until next week to go and see all of the animals at the zoo. First stops Orangs and Rhinos :).

I think also it was a good way to get a few more people looking at the webcams.

Yeah, that's a good point. In my opinion they've put webcams on the animals that seem to generate the least interest. I like the flamingos and giraffes because they're a little different webcam-wise, but they have elephants/tigers/lions/chimps/orangs/gibbons/a variety of monkeys/rhinos/cheetahs/jaguars etc. These are all far more interesting to the general zoo visitor.

Sounds adorable, I can't wait to keep an eye out for it on the 11th :). I never even knew she had been pregnant, they've kept that one quiet.

It's not due out of the nest until September, so you'll have to make do with the CCTV pictures, that is unless she's in the box without a camera.

Though you never know - as I said earlier, myself and my girlfriend did actually see the mother taking the cub outside very briefly.

The giraffes, yes. But I still think some that I mentioned (particularly orangs) would be more popular. I would still keep the two that they have, but I would just put some more in their 'focal exhibits' like Spirit of the Jag, Realm of the Red Ape, Elephants of the Asian Forest etc. Giraffes are intriguing (as are flamingos in their own little way), but I think they would benefit from webcams in their 'landmark exhibits' if you see what I mean.

Also, it would be very good if I got lucky seeing the Red Panda cub outside. However [all being well] it would be no big loss since I will be going later in the year anyway where it is more likely to be out.

Out of interest, I seem to remember the Red Pandas breeding before (2 cubs I think). Is this true, and if so was it a successful breeding?

That's correct, there were two cubs in 2008 who have since left the zoo.

I think webcams need to be in places where you'll get quite a bit of action, so I'd say the Elephant Paddock, the indoor area of Tsavo, all of the Monkey Islands enclosures and the Penguins.

Ahh good. I like your ideas (another thing to think about is where you are likely to see the animals. I think orangs would be good, and I agree with yours (particularly rhinos :))

Visited today, managed to see the Duiker outside today in one of the paddocks stood watching her for twenty minutes she seems to be settling in well but is still very skitish and the wind set her running a few times today.

All of the Elephants were outside exploring their refurbed enclosure looks really good in my opinion still no sign of calfs yet though fingers crossed all goes ok in next few weeks. Saw all seven of the bush dog pups who are now about six weeks old all looking in great condition and looked like they were starting to feed on meat. Also saw the Red Panda cub on the camera a keeper said that it is doing really well but they were surprised that only one was born as usually Red Panda's give birth to twins.

As has been mentioned before Sammy and Kitani are now together in Tsavo. With Ema & Bashira in the other paddock with I think Malindi and possibly Asani in the other paddock. Can anybody clarify this please as wasnt sure whether it was Asani or not.

And after several visits to the zoo over the last few years we finally got to see the Pudu and as fate would have it managed to see all three of them at once. Still no sign of the Anteater or the Pgmy Marmosets.

There was a man giving a keeper at the Jaguars a hard time about Pele not going outside - however I think he does pace around an awful lot.

.

I guess Pele is such an old animal he has inherited stereotypic behaviour from his previous home. However, I have often wondered why there has not been any rotation of the jags. Although I love Spirit of the Jaguar, it is the most frusrating exhibit for viewing, especially as the forest planting makes it even harer to see him. I would love to see one of the pairs in the forest side as i think this has to be one of the most attractive and well planted enclosures in the zoo.

I have a photo of a black jaguar in the savannah side (outdoors), though I don't think this is Pele (I seem to remember hearing that they had a black jaguar before Pele). I agree, I was disappointed that I didn't see him at all on my last visit.

the previous black jaguar was Ebony, she was very old when she arrived, and only lasted a couple of years.

The jaguars where easier to rotate in the beginning of "spirit of the jaguar" as there where only 1:1 (old pair, Ebony and Salvador)), and then followed by a breeding pair. Once the old pair died, Marwell's 2:1 family group arrived which may have made rotating a bit more difficiult

Ahhh right, did Salvador die then? I seem to remember him still being alive. (I thought it was Salvador and Sophie in the savannah side, Pele in the rainforest side and Coral and (I think it begins with 'W' but don't know the name) in the waterfall enclosure.

Well I think the first old male (spotted) jaguar was called Salvador, however I may be wrong. I'm sure someone will correct me.
