Marwell Wildlife My Marwell observations

Re ZooLeopard

Hi

I don’t have any pictures what would show you what the Snow Leopard enclosure looks like.

However I can tell you that it used to be a fairly wide enclosure with entrances to the den built into the rocks.

There are also rocks the Snow Leopard can climb on and look over some of the park or as was normal for Yasmin curl up and sleep.

I say used to be fairly wide as not long before Christmas it was divided into two ready for the arrival of the new Snow Leopards.

The last time I visited (2 weeks ago) the current Snow Leopard, Yasmin could access both sides via the den.

My visi Sunday 17 January 2010

After the snow of the last week or so it has been nice to get back to Marwell. Even if it was only for a few hours.

Tapir

The first thing that struck me on my visit is how big Rio the baby tapir is getting.

Rio and his mother and father were all out in their paddock when I arrived.

Leopards

It was nice to see Marwell has covered the wooden decking by the viewing window to next to Kaia's (the female Amur Leopard) enclosure.

This was very slippery when wet or icy.

Kaia spent the whole of the time I was in the park on her high platform surveying her surroundings and sleeping.

Akin in the enclosure next door (male Amur Leopard) could be found prowling around his enclosure.

Tigers

I spend a good few minutes watching Gamin and Yenna (Amur tigers).

They spent quite a while following each other around.

Zambar has not yet gone to Blackpool he was still in his enclosure next to Gamin and Yenna.

He spent part of the morning walking around his enclosure before stopping for a sleep. A standard day for a tiger you could say.

Snow Leopard

As I reported yesterday Yasmin the snow leopard is now off show at Marwell. This is while work takes place on her enclosure in readiness for the arrival of the two new snow leopards.

When are the new Snow Leopards arriving?

Hi Does anyone know the arrival date for the new Snow Leopards at Marwell?

I guess it has been delayed due to the bad weather.

I visited Marwell today (in the rain) but didn't see the new Snow Leopards, however I did see the new Amur Leopard which I was most happy about, She was sat up on her perch getting very wet lol.

Re Snow Leopards

Thanks Zambar and Dragonsdust for your info.

Thats great news that the Snow Leopards have arrived.:)

It's ironic that they arrived this week as they would have felt at home last week with all the snow.

I guess they are in Yasmins old enclosure at the moment. Does anyone know if they are free to go outside yet or are they just avoiding the rain.

Snow Leopard names?

Hi does anyone know the names of the Snow Leopards which arrived at Marwell on Tuesday?

I assume it will be close call for Zambar now to leave for Blackpool new tiger surrounds? Any news on breeding recommendations?

Zambar will be paired with Anastasia from Whipsnade if that's what you mean. It's speculated that a new breeding pair of tigers will take Zambar's enclosure given Gamin & Yenna are retired, thought that isn't known for definite.

My visit to Marwell Saturday 23 January 2010

Hi,

SNOW LEOPARD

I have just visited Marwell and I am pleased to report that both the Snow Leopards have indeed arrived as Zambar previously reported on this thread.

The male is called Indeever and arrived from Zurich Zoo in Switzerland

The female is called Irina and arrived from Nordens Ark in Sweeden

When I arrived there was no sign of Indeever or Irina.

A sign on the entrance to the enclosure indicating Do not enter, Rabies quarantine was a big clue that they were there.

I was just about to walk away and Indeever popped his head out of his den and sat down watching me.

I returned several times throughout the day and found him looking out.

I did not see him in the enclosure.

As for Irina she was much more allusive . I was told that she is much more shy and has yet to venture outside.

As you look at the enclosure Indeever (the male) is in the left hand side with Irina (the female) in the right hand side.

ZAMBAR (AMUR TIGER)

I also got the chance to say good bye to Zambar who was walking past the window by the pool of water.

While I had my face to the glass taking some pictures he jumped up and banged on the window to try and get a reaction.

This is something I have heard he does but have never seen it.

Sadly I was too close for a photograph.

I will try and post some photographs later when I download them from my camera.

Thanks Kiska

Thanks for the first pictures of Irina. It's nice to see she is now starting to come out of her den.

Also good to see Indeever starting to leave his den as well.

Lets hope that it's not too long before they interact with each other through the fence.

So now there's a Kiska, Kwame and a Zambar? Are we sure the Marwell Residents aren't just being given computers?
