Marwell Wildlife My Marwell observations

Lol, I'm sure I saw Turkus trying to make an account and Antone posting some pics on his the other week. ;)

Re HuxleyPig and Zambar

We are a clever bunch of animals at Marwell.

It's not just monkeys you can train to use computers.

It must be something they put in the food!

Irina's sister Irma is going to Twycross Zoo once there new exibit is complete :)

There is a fascinating article in this Annual Report from Nordens Ark about Irina's mother Saheli fostering Irma (who was born at Kolmarden), as her own mother had shown no interest in rearing her. Irma is only a day younger than Irina and her brother and she was successfully fostered into the family, so this story has a happy ending :)

Re Mhale

Hi Mhale,

I am just researching the names and details of Snow Leopards over the years for my other thread and by pure coincidence I was just looking at the very same article.

Yes I agree it is a facinating story.

Saturday 30 January. Zambar's last Saturday at Marwell

Hi,

I have just returned from Marwell.

Snow Leopards

It was nice to see both the snow leopards out in their enclosure.

Both spent most of the time I was there sleeping. However Indeever (the male) did walk round a little bit watching what I was doing before curling up and doing what cats do best sleeping.

Kookaburra
I stopped to visit the Kookaburra who took quite a shine to my camera. I think it saw its reflection in the lens as it kept moving its head to see as I moved the camera.

Amur Tigers (Especially Zambar)

With Marwell’s own website saying the last change to see Zambar was until 1400 today I changed by plans to visit today.

I was told that by about 1000 this message has actually been taken off the website. Don’t know if this was correct or not.

Zambar could be found outside the whole time I was at Marwell which was until about 1430.

Much of the day was spent walking around the enclosure giving his usual grunt as if to acknowledge you as he walked past.

He stopped for a while drinking from his pond before he walking past the glass viewing window.

In true Zambar fashion he jumped up at the window several times during the day.

He also spent quite a lot of time walking along the fence next to his dad Gamin. They both would stop in the same place and turn around and walk back again.

It almost looked as if they were saying goodbye. Of course I am not suggesting this was actually the case.

I will post some pictures of Zambar’s last Saturday at Marwell in the next 24 hours.

It will be sad to see him go but at all being well the zoo chat members in the Blackpool area will keep us updated on how he is doing.

I hope the move goes well and lets hope its not too long before there are some little Zambar’s in Blackpool.

Goodbye Zambar

With Zambar departing for Blackpool on Monday 1 February 2010 here are a few of my photographs taken on Saturday 30 January 2010.

Wishing Zambar all the best in his new life in Blackpool.

Was Zambar Amur Tiger on show today?

Hi can anyone tell me if Zambar was on show today at Marwell (Sunday 31 January) or was he in his den prior to his trip to Blackpool.

Or has he already departed however I know Zambar (Zoo Chat member) was told he would be going on Monday.

Thanks Kwame

Farewell Zambar

No, his enclosure was empty this afternoon (Jan 31) and I was told he had already been shut in. There was a digger with a small metal crate (presumably the one he'll be transported in) parked up against his "house".

Re Cat-Man

Thanks Cat-Man

Sometimes you have days where you happen to be in the right place at the right time to take a photograph.

Saturday was one of those days.

2009 Marwell Inventory

Hi for those who may be interested Marwell Wildlife has added the latest inventory to its website.

It makes interesting reading and is a useful resource provided by Marwell Wildlife.

Click here to go to the 2009 inventory.

I have found a couple of interesting bits of information contained within it.

Giant Anteaters

The giant anteater which was thought originally to be female has been reclassified as male.

This means that Marwell now has two male giant anteaters.

West African Dwarf Crocodile

The West African Dwarf Crocodile was originally thought to be female but has now been re-sexed as male.

Amur Leopard

The Amur Leopard shows a Neonatal death and a normal death. I guess that the Neonatal death has been recorded in the wrong column (should have been departed) as the end of year total of 1 male, 1 female 0 unknown is correct.

Bennett’s Wallaby

The Bennett’s Wallaby’s were shown at the end of 2008 to be 0 male, 6 female, 14 unknown however this has been revised to 6 male, 14 female, 8 unkown.

It then records no births for the year 2009 but records 14 deaths.

Leaving a total of 0 male, 3 female, 11 unknown.

Don’t know if anyone can solve what has happened here. Or is it just a typing error and lets face it that is easily done when working with lots of numbers.

Red Panda

Just a quick note as it was reported that only one Red Panda has been seen for quite some time now. The inventory does show 2 female Red Panda’s as of the 31 December 2009. Of course something could of changed since then.

One of the Red Panda’s was re-sexed on the 2008 inventory from male to female.

Known about the anteater problem for a while now, but didn't share it due to 'security' reasons. It explains why Ernie always ended up getting into fights with 'Arica', who is actually bigger and stronger than he is: In fact, a good way to identify Ernesto now is a thumbprint between his eyes that was the result of one of their fights. The other has been affectionately redubbed 'Antonio' by many of the staff and volunteers, and while there's an opening for a zoo to obtain a male anteater, it'll be another hard time for Marwell to find an actual female.

Also of note is the Von der Decken's Hornbill that arrived from Paultons at the end of December, something I learn't last oryx club. Interesting that the pottos were the same status as they were before by the end of the year, maybe they've just become a bit more secretive. A great shame that Marwell no longer keeps Babirusa or Mouse Lemurs given their captive rarity, and sad that both the Long-Eared Hedgehog and Danube Crested Newts died soon after their arrival: It explains why the latter haven't been in their designated tank in the Amphibian Ark.

On a positive, great to see Basil the Brush-Tail Possum is still at the park, he was one of my favourites. Hope he goes back on show soon. :)

Are there still 2 Red Panda's at Marwell?

Hi all,

I don't think I will get to Marwell this weekend.

If any other zoo chat members go can you have a look to see if you can see two red panda's.

As Mhale reported last week only one has been seen on show so far this year.

The inventory list at the end of December showed they still had two.

Any updates would be appreciated.

My update Sunday 21 February 2010

My Marwell visit Sunday 21 March 2010.

Following a visit to Colchester Zoo yesterday I today went to Marwell.

Milena Amur Leopard (Colchester Zoo)

A quick update on a former Marwell resident. Milena the Amur Leopard (Akin’s daughter) was moved into her new enclosure at Colchester Zoo just a few days ago.

I just about could see her yesterday as she is still quite shy in her new enclosure. This is only to be expected. All being well she will be introduced to her male counterpart later in the year.

Giraffe update.

Good news it looks like there could be a couple of new arrivals in the giraffe house in the next few months.

Makeda is due to give birth in the next couple of months.

Also Matilda is also expecting. She is expected to give birth shortly after Matilda. I think about 3 months time was mentioned but I could be wrong.

This would be very exciting news for Marwell as both Kizmet (the father) and Matilda are pure Rothschild giraffes.

Amur Tiger
As was reported last week by Huxley pig (I think) both Gamin and Yenna have been separated,

Gamin was in the larger enclosure and Yenna was in Zambars old enclosure.

I was told the reason was that there was a possibility tha a new mate for Yenna may be being sought.

Again if there is any truth in this only time will tell.

Both Gamin and Yenna were walking around the enclosure looking towards each other. It is a shame that they have had to be split up.

Mishmi Takin

Last week it was reported that Mooshu and Mulan had been separated. The speculation being that Mulan may be pregnant.

When I arrived they were in separate enclosures so it looked like the report was correct.

However by late afternoon when I walked past they were both in the front enclosure together.

It is possible that they are being kept apart for some of the time I guess.

Red Panda

There was still only one Red Panda visible in the enclosure. This was the one with the bald tail.

I don’t know where the other one is, unless he is in sleeping inside the enclosure.

Snow Leopards

Both snow leopards (Irina and Indeever) both looked relaxed in their enclosure.

They seem to have settled in well.

Visit Sunday 7 March 2010

Hi,

Here are my observations from my visit on Sunday 7 March 2010.

Gentle Lemur’s
There was a cute baby Gentle Lemur with its mother in the enclosure.

Bennett’s Wallaby
I also noticed two of the Bennett’s Wallaby’s were carrying Joey. One was obviously still very young as it was reddish in colour as its fur had yet to fully grow.

Snow Leopards
Both the snow leopards were outside in the winter sun the whole time I was at Marwell.

Both looked to have settled in to their new home and looked quite relaxed.

They have both mastered the art of sitting outside and avoiding eye contact with anyone with a camera.

Amur Tigers,
Yenna was quite vocal today as she growled and huffed as she walked along the perimeter of her enclosure.

I also thought that Yenna was limping a bit on her back legs.

She kept looking out for Gamin who was still separated from her in the larger of the two enclosures.

Red Panda

Again only one of the two male Red Panda’s were visible. It was high in the tree so I was unable to see if it was the bald tailed Red Panda or not.

Cheetah

Both Turkus and Paka spent the day outside in the sunshine.

Bat-eared foxes
All the bat-eared foxes were outside on the grass sunning themselves.

My Easter Sunday visit (4 April 2010)

Here are some of my observations from today’s visit.

Snow Leopards

I got talking to one of the visitor guides who told me that Marwell had intended to introduce the two snow leopards to each other last week.

However for some reason this has been temporarily postponed.

Lets hope that this goes ahead soon so we can see Yasmin return back on show. (I guess she will not be that impressed to have to share half her old enclosure with the new snow leopards).

Amur Leopards

There was no sign of the female today the door to her enclosure was closed the whole time I was at Marwell 1000 until 1400.

Hope she is ok.

The male Amur leopard was also very allusive today. There was no sign of him until about 1200 and even then it was only his tail in the doorway.

He did venture out shortly before I left for the day.

Amur tigers

The tigers are still in separate enclosures but both were interacting with each other along the fence line.

It was nice to read this week in Marwell’s magazine that they are seeking a new breeding pair of tigers. However I guess this could take some time.

The current non breeding pair will remain at Marwell and will be put back together again.

Bennett’s Wallaby

Spent some time watching the Bennett’s Wallaby’s one of which had a joey in its pouch. I know from my last visit there was more joey in the group, but today I could only see one as they were sheltering out of the wind which made it hard to see them.

Gentle Lemur

The baby gentle lemur is very cute. It is growing very fast it looked a lot bigger than when I got to see it just 3 weeks ago.

Giraffe

Isabella the giraffe is still not 100% well she has lost a lot of weight since having Kwame last year.

Part of the problem is that she is still providing milk for Kwame. The other two youngsters Tiye and Christa are not helping much as they also taking Isabella’s free milk.

She is still being given daily supplements and is still eating well.

Once she stops providing milk it is hoped that she will return to normal.

Matilda is due to give birth any day now. While I was watching her she seemed to jump. I think this coincided with a kick coming from inside her stomach from her unborn giraffe.

Makeda is also expecting and she should give birth during May.

Where is the new arrivals / departures board.

The information board which gives details of new arrivals and births has gone from its position outside the shop. Does anyone know where it is now located.

Red Panda

Before I go I should say that I again only got to see the bald tailed red panda.

Happy Easter zoo chat readers.
