I know we are heading off topic here but interesting that Whipsnade have gone the other way from "wild animal park" back to "zoo".

That is interesting as Whipsnade is more genuinely a Wild Animal Park than most places, yet they are opting for the title of 'Zoo' again.

Just recived an e-mail reply regarding more facts about the valley:

- The opening by the Kenyan Ambassador is indeed taking place on the 3rd April rather than the 4th as advertised by the site. Luckilly I have an inset day, so I'll definately be there.
- According to the head curator, it's highly unlikely rhino will ever go into the area. I found this dissapointing, as I think they would benefit from the valley better than their current paddock, which I think they are starting to outgrow.
- There are no plans at present for safari veichles to go through the valley, but this may happen in the future.
- And of course, they plan to slowly build upon the number of species and volume of the valley. Didn't specify which animals though.

Thanks for the update, as said before i would love to see black rhino at Marwell rather than the normal whites

Offtopic: Should we be changing Marwell zoo to Marwell wildlife on here?.. I might give sim a quick message.

animals in the valley

"I think that the gemsbok will be included in the first species to be introduced to the valley, i would also think that the roan and sable antilope, aswell as the hartmans mountain zebra will move in soon after its opening. do people think that the scimitar horned oryx will be inroduced to the valley, or mabey move into aridlands? I do hope that the rhinos and the Giraffe move into the african vally, it would make an impresive sight seeing the rhinos grazeing amoung the roaming heards of antelope and zebra, and the giraffes towering above them all. i also hope that the kudu and the nyala are introduced to the valley. Do you think that the sitatunga will be introduced to the valley?"

Sorry, but I have been patient enough. Where do you get this nonsense from? It has already been stated that the African Valley will reflect Marwell's work in Kenya, so Gemsbok obviously would not be appropriate. The Roan and Sable were moved away from the Valley area several weeks ago as part of the Valley planning (to the former Waterbuck House, and Into Africa) so clearly not intended for the Valley, while the Waterbuck are. It is Grevy zebra in the Valley, not Hartmann's zebra. Who dreamt up the idea of moving Kudu, Nyala and Sitatunga? And moving the rhinos was never an option otherwise the valley fencing would have been designed differently.

Zooboy, if I remember rightly that quote came from Cat-Man. He has a tendancy to be over-enthusiastic when it comes to future zoo plans, so this should be kept in mind

I agree with zooboy just lately alot of rubbish is been posted as fact on here when its not and its only coming from 2 or 3 places(i don`t include youself in that)it needs to be stopped before it gets out of hand.

I hate to burst your bubble but catman is only young and does tend to go a bit over the top sometimes but in my opinion its good to see young people so interested in wildlife and zoos, its encouraging to see that he has his own thoughts and visions for the zoo... maybe one day he will progress to actually work at the zoo :) Give the guy a chance is all im saying...

Indeed! Don't discourage him, he's part of the future generation that we want to encourage.

The Marwell website has now been updated to suit the brand name and logo. A new map has been added too, which includes the valley (it also marks giraffe in said place; whether or not they will be included when it opens I'm not sure) and the new tapir paddock. Don't forget I'm visting Marwell Wildlife (sounds strange) tommorow, so I'll take plenty of photos of the opening, the valley and (if they've arrived) the tapirs.

Marwell Wildlife

From what the person I spoke to told me, the Tapirs are in quarantine. Id guess that they will be on show for tomorrow. Also, the pure Rothschilds are going to stay where they are, the giraffes that are a mix of two species will be in the valley.

Looking at the new map... why are there serval over by the Bongo? Is this a new enclosure? If so, it was converted from the gazelle to serval quite quickly. I was only there two weeks ago. Or is it simply a mistake? Lol

updates from the map

-roan antilope have moved next to somali wild ass
-Camels moved to former ankole/llama enclosure, which is planed to be expanded to part of the auzi bush walk
-Like Marwell Dalek said, tapirs also marked

Possibly because the valley isnt suitable for Rhino at the moment :)

To be honest, I wouldnt expect the Rhino to be moving anytime soon.

Catman, those are in my last update. The camels are there temporarilly, as a quiet place for Wacker to settle in with Marmaduke as the enclosure is far too small for permanant residence.

Huxley, thanks for the info. And good find too, will have to check that out when I go tommorow. And yeah, the fencing around the valley isn't really suitable for rhino at the moment. I've got the feeling it might change though; the masterplan map shows a very big lake in the current rhino paddock, and I know it would be a bit of a space waster for whites, but an asset to Indians. It would fit in well with the opposite Roof of the World too.

Money's a bit short at the mo, but I spect it will be a few more valley adjustments (the e-mail said they may introduce a safari ride in the future), the gorilla enclosure, the new entrance/shop and the British Woodland biome.

Okay, lol, I have a few questions now:

The Masterplan Map? Where can I take a gander at this?
Do you reckon the marmosets will be on the island in the tropical house for tomorrow?
Will something be on the island at the pond near the entrance soon? Looks a bit bare
Where is the Gorilla Enclosure going to be?
Any news on the Amphibian Centre?
And whats the British Woodland Biome going to feature? Im guessing this will be in the currently very empty area opposite the Capybara, Kangaroo and Hippos.

I trust you'll know the answers ;)

The Masterplan Maps can be seen in the exhibition hall of the education centre. One highlights the biomes, the other some key features.
Possibly, but they'll definately be going on at some point during the holidays.
Last month it had Golden-Headed Lion Tamarins. Think they're still there.
The Gorilla enclosure will be in the Chapman's Zebra paddock. It's location opposite the okapi will begin to form the Congo Forest biome.
Geoff Read (Head of Lower Vertabrates and Invertabrates) said it would be open for Easter.
Yes, the British Woodland will be the slice of woods between the car park and former treetops restaraunt, occupying the old playzone as well. The area will mostly be a woodland walk with designated wildlife areas, but an animal plan hasn't quite being fully formed yet. Bill Hall thinks it's likely Hazel Dormice will be included.

Unfortunately, the valley viewing area was TOTALLY closed off to the public, meaning not only was the opening off-show but so was the valley itself, even after all the guests left; no pictures I'm afraid. However, I did catch glimpses of zebras and ostrich in the valley through gaps in trees near Heart of Africa. Onto good news, the tapirs are now on show, and I have pics of them. Nothing on the servals near Heart of Africa, Arabian Oryx are occupying that enclosure with the dama gazelle moved to one of the gemsbok yards opposite the tigers. Pygmy marmosets not yet in Tropical World, Amphibian Centre still not open, lots of rebranding work. Not really anymore animal news to report, except personal ones. Very good close-up views of Gamin, the buffalo, wild ass, red pandas and gentle lemurs. Mr Bou was showing amusing behaviour too, not eating his food but instead trying to eat his dish!
